Robot Petting Zoo Workshop
  08 May - 06:30 PM
  San Jose, United States
What dances, eats, and lights up? Animals you create in the Robot Petting Zoo!  Come spend a very hands-on evening learning to design, build, and program your own robot animal with the Hummingbird Robotics Kit. Find out how you can host your own Robot Petting Zoo & Makeathon anywhere. No coding experience necessary--Absolute beginners are welcome! A Hummingbird Robotics Kit will be provided for you to use during the workshop, but if you want to take your kit home with you, be sure to purchase "Workshop + Hummingbird Base Kit" at checkout.  Do you already have a Hummingbird robotics kit? Feel free to bring it with you!  Please bring a laptop with Snap! software downloaded: http://hummingbirdkit.com/learning/snap-programming  The Robot Petting Zoo (RPZ) & Makeathon engages students and educators in friendly making, coding, and design with a creative twist on the traditional hackathon. During an RPZ Makeathon, student groups create animatronic animals while learning empathic design thinking, teamwork, and engineering using cardboard, robotics kits, code, and craft supplies. They then bring their animals together for a Robot Petting Zoo Showcase where the public, and especially young children, can interact with them.  RPZ's are transforming robotics education by engaging the disengaged, breaking stereotypes about who can be computer scientists, engineers, and technology innovators, and attracting more people into creative and technical learning in a more accessible, friendly way. Have questions about the workshop? Please contact Katie@birdbraintechnologies.com  Parking $5 Flat Rate at San Jose Convention Center. See Parking Map.

ELIGIBILITY VRHack@Cal is open to all undergraduates of all majors. Whether you're a backend coder, a graphic designer, or just looking to learn more about VR, all are welcome. REQUIREMENTS Hackers will form teams up to THREE people and create a VR application that focuses on education. Something important to note is that writing code is NOT necessary. Teams can either create a graphic design showcasing their application, or create a real VR application. Graphic designs should be as detailed as possible and should really showcase the "VR" parts of the application. Certain websites can help with VR prototypes (https://blog.mozvr.com/quick-vr-prototypes/) Note that judging will award far more points to teams that actually create a real VR application with source code.  Every team will also be respondible for submitting a powerpoint describing their application and its relevance to education, as well as a YouTube video talking over this powerpoint or showcasing the application. JUDGING CRITERIA Complexity How complex is your application? If you wrote code and have a working VR app, you will likely score full points for this section. Judges will also account for how thorough and detailed graphic designs appear. Creativity Applications that showcase virtual reality in a unique an interesting way will be rewarded with more points. Relevance to Education The theme of this hackathon is education so make sure your application is at least somewhat related. Market Feasibility How good of an idea is the application. If judges can see many people using this application, more points will be rewarded. AWARD 1st Place: $500 + HTC VR Headset(worth $800) 2nd Place: $300 3rd Place: $100 IMPORTANT INFO: 1.
