Fashion Entrepreneur Tradeshow - Fashion-A-Preneur Hackathon

In celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation in partnership with Fashion Designer in Residence Stacy Stube kick off Baltimore City's first ever Fashion Entrepreneur Trade Show called Fashion-A-Preneur. This event will have a mix of panelist discussions for small fashion companies. Topics include: how to grow by selling directly to customer in the digital space, finding market opportunities with crowdfunding. The trade show encourages a move away from the traditional debt based wholesale fashion business model. Where instead positioning for just-in-time manufacturing, small batch production, niche market products and services.
Fashion Entrepreneurs will have Trade booth Tables to showcase current collections, along with various supportive businesses and organizations specifically focused on small fashion business start-ups.
By empowering the local fashion business community, the power shift moves back into the hands of the maker to transition onshore apparel manufacturing to the next generation.
Event Panelist Speakers
Sally DiMarco - Fashion Education for Entrepreneurship
A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) (Bachelor of Fine Art, Fashion Design) and Johns Hopkins University (Masters Degree in Higher Education).
She has earned her highly regarded reputation in the fashion industry beginning as the chief assistant to the fashion designer at Glenbrook Coat Company, which was based in Baltimore. At Glenbrook, the fur-lined coat collections for names such as, Chanel, Yves St Laurent, and Dior were created.
Currently, she is the Fashion Director for SEW Bromo a program supported by the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower in Baltimore.
Sally will discuss where fashion education and entrepreneurship collide to create opportunity through business, in particular, what trade skills are needed to become the maker.
Marc Sklar - Luxury Fashion Retailing
Founder and owner of Gian Marco Menswear, a multi-million dollar international importer of luxury and designer merchandise since 1990. One of our goals is to find undiscovered European designers in the USA and bring them into the States. The second part of that equation is to refine the product to be compatible with our client's needs and likes without diluting the designer's original concept.
Jim Peterson - Fashion Business Set-up
A serial entrepreneur known as “the floor guy” because he has owned a couple of flooring companies and a flooring manufacturing company for the past 20 years. Jim now serves as the Small Business Outreach Coordinator for the Small Business Resource Center (a division of the Mayor’s Office of Women and Minority Owned Businesses Development)
Peterson will discuss, how the SBRC can help you grow your fashion-related business through networking, affordable capital lending, and manufacturing assistance.
Jill Silverman - Sustainability in Fashion
Jill completed her Master's in Fashion and Apparel Studies at the University of Delaware, where she focused on sustainability and received the Certificate of Social Responsible & Sustainable Apparel Business. Her experience includes teaching a course on sustainability in the industry, fabricating a bio-textile that could reduce waste and toxic chemicals in the footwear industry, providing upcycling tutorials. She currently works at Fashions Unlimited as the Product Sustainability Manager and hopes to help craft a less wasteful industry. Through this conversation, Silverman will discuss methods to design and produce more sustainably.
Jason Tompkins - Styling to Sell Online
A graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology and the Conde Nast school of design in London. He is a Fashion stylist and women's wear designer whose current clients include Ralph Lauren, UnderArmour, Belk, Peter Millar the Omni Hotel group and the American Craft Council. Jason will provide tips on marketing your product online, how image affect sales, how to convey your brand's unique visual story in a saturated digital era.
Ilya Schroeder - Mindful Modeling
Has been in modeling/acting for over three years. His main passion is to show that modeling is more than superficial posing and just “pictures” but much deeper. Ilya will discuss his journey in building a career, but also the beauty that embraces confidence and self-love.
C Harvey - Manufacturing for Entrepreneurs
Founder of North Star Needle Co., an online platform that connects emerging fashion designers that have small batch needs to independent apparel producers that produce from a home office or studio. C. Harvey previously founded Generation of Dreamers and Baltimore's Gifted.

JOIN US THIS JUNE for a US-GAZA Humanitarian Health Design Hackathon with students, faculty, and experts based in Baltimore and Gaza.

Participants will listen and participate in live lectures held in Baltimore and Gaza to help them understand the design process and healthcare needs in Gaza. Participants will share questions and discussion on the issues with experts. Details on topics covered below. Participants will have the opportunity to speak directly with care workers and residents to better understand the needs and context.

WHAT: Hackathon participants will be on teams comprised of participants from both locations. Teams will collaborate using tools such as Google Drive, Whatsapp, and Google Hangouts to exchange ideas and create shared documents detailing their ideas, solutions, stakeholder feedback, etc. They will also have access to a "Portal" - a roomequipped with immersive audiovisual technology to ensure smooth virtual collaboration. Teams receive extensive mentorship by Innovation Mentors, Subject Matter Experts, faculty, and staff who will guide the teams through the design process. Prototyping supplies will be available on both sites. Each team will report to the larger group on the needs they have chosen to address and on their solution concepts.

WHERE: Participants in Gaza will work in a space designated by Mercy Corps and participants on the JHU campus will work in Clark Hall, on the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University.

Below, is a master timetable of work sessions coordinated between Gaza and Baltimore.
BEYOND THE HACKATHON: For those interested, teams will continue to work together on an ad hoc basis and receive guidance from faculty for a duration of 2-3 weeks and possibly even longer. For the top teams and ideas, additional support for grant applications will be provided throughout 2018.

Identify and define public health problems and needs in a specific domain for design purposes.

Apply formal design processes from different disciplines for the design of solutions and interventions given a set of constraints
Apply relevant and appropriate technologies and tools to prototype their designs
Present their problems and designs to a diverse audience effectively
Function effectively in a team with diverse backgrounds and perspectives
Articulate a deeper understanding of perspectives and concerns of students in the Middle East and the United States.

IP RULES: By registering, participants agree that all concepts contained in the idea submission forms will be the property of their respective institution (JHU or Mercy Corps, based on the location), and will be managed according to the established IP rules of their institution. If your idea (based on the forms submitted) is included in one of these proposals and funding for development is obtained, you will be invited to participate in further development efforts via your institutional partner.

Hack for Impact is a Hackthon being held at the Impact Hub Baltimore with the mission to foster collaboration between social change makers and technology innovators.
The 24 hour Hackathon will begin on Friday at 5:30pm and commence with the selection of a winner on Saturday at 5:30pm
Teams of developers, engineers and designers will collaborate to build and implement a solution to tackle a problem statement in one of the challenge catagories.

York Exponential Robothon 2018

What is Robothon? Robothon is York Exponential’s 32-hour York city hackathon inspired by and focused on the advancement and innovation of collaborative robots (robots that are designed to work alongside and augment humans, not replace them).
Why are we hosting Robothon? Robothon’s intention is to introduce the average person to the capabilities of our robots. We will have our engineers on site at all times to introduce functionality and monitor safety, and during the event, attendees will hear from inspiring speakers and have the opportunity to participate in workshops as well as fun activities planned throughout.
Where and when is Robothon? April 7th-8th
Robothon will take place from the morning of Saturday, April 7th to the evening of Sunday, April 8th. This is to help usher in robot week which takes place the following week!

Summary:
Data Science and machine learning are receiving a great deal of attention today, and cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services are adding support to their platforms to support these types of applications. In this talk, Jim will discuss various algorithms and techniques used in data science and machine learning and how these algorithms relate to the services provided by Amazon Web Services, such as Amazon Rekognition, Amazon Machine Learning, and Amazon Polly to name a few. Included in the talk will be a few demonstrations and an overview of some of the new services recently announced at AWS Re:Invent held November, 2017.
Speaker Bio:
Mr. Cannaliato is a certified AWS Solutions Architect, technologist, and SCRUM master. His thirty years of experience has encompassed a wide range of topics, such as, real time embedded systems, PC and web applications, and big data systems. He has over seven years of experience working on AWS, and recently won the IITSEC Data Science Futures Hackathon using AWS services. In his spare time, he tinkers with electronics, robotics, and spends time mentoring middle and high school students.

HUMANITARIAN ENGINEERING Designing Solutions for Health Challenges in Crises Course, Hackathon, Field Work and Beyond
JOIN US THIS JANUARY! First ever JOINT US-MIDDLE EAST Design Teams, Focused on Health Needs in Humanitarian Settings, with students, faculty, and experts in Baltimore and Beirut.
PART ONE January 8 - 16: Listen and participate in live and recorded lectures, to help you understand the design process and tools, and to understand healthcare needs in humanitarian crises. Participants in Baltimore, on the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) campus, and Beirut on the Campus of American University of Beirut (AUB) will hear the same lectures, and share questions and discussion on the issues with experts. Details on topics covered below. Participants at AUB will have the opportunity to visit refugee camps and facilities in Lebanon and speak directly with care workers and residents, to better understand the needs and context. Participants in Baltimore at JHU will hear from their co-participants in Lebanon on their observations. WHERE: Most lectures can be heard online at a location of your choice. Working space will also be available on both campuses.
PART TWO January 17 - 21: An intense week of joint teamwork. Teams will be formed combining participants in both locations, who will meet and work together using a first-time ever Virtual Design Team Room, based on the successful Shared_Studio Portals. Teams will also use other online tools, shared documents and folders, shared whiteboards, and video-conferencing. Teams will be mentored during this week by faculty and other expert mentors who will guide the team through the process. Prototyping supplies will be available on both campuses. At the end of week 2, each team will report to the larger group on the needs they have chosen to address, and on their solution concepts. WHERE: Participants on the AUB campus will be in the Irani Oxy Engineering Complex (IOEC) Building (Rooms TBD) and participants on the JHU campus will be in Clark Hall, second-floor Design Studio, on the Homewood Campus.
PART THREE January 22 - 26: Taking the feedback from week 2, teams will meet jointly 1-2 times per day to refine and further develop their solutions. Experts and mentors will continue to be available as needed. WHERE: Space on both campuses will be available for working, meeting, and building, including the Virtual Design Team Room. Teams can also meet virtually.
BEYOND WEEK THREE: For the 3 weeks after the event, teams will continue to work together on an ad hoc basis, meeting on average 1 time per day, and receiving guidance from faculty. For the top teams and ideas, additional support will be provided throughout 2018.
WHO MAY ATTEND: Students, fellows, faculty or staff from AUB, JHU and BU, practitioners, and entrepreneurs, can apply. Students at the UG and Graduate levels, in all related fields, including Engineering, Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine are welcome. Partial support provided by the Aspen Institute Stevens Initiative, with additional support from AUB, Global Health Institute (GHI) at AUB, JHU-CBID, and Boston University BME.
COURSE RECOGNITION AND CREDIT: All participants who complete the three-week program will receive a Certificate of Completion for the "HUMANITARIAN ENGINEERING Designing Solutions for Health Challenges in Crises Course". Contact your local university (JHU, AUB, or BU) about the possibility of formal university course credit. Rules differ per institution. Please note that AUB students wishing to receive credit for this course (3cr.) must register through AUB SIS, and settle standard university fees during the drop and add period of the Winter Term (January 2018).
