Hacking Health Saskatoon 2015
02 Oct - 05:00 PM
Saskatoon, Canada
Hacking Health is designed to improve healthcare by inviting technology creators and healthcare professionals to collaborate on realistic, human-centric solutions to front-line problems. Our hackathons are fun, intense, hands-on events where small teams tackle tough problems in a supportive community of peers and mentors. This will be the second annual Hacking Health Saskatoon event, after great success last year. We will be hoping to see both new faces and old, working on interesting projects and teams. If you are a programmar, engineer, designer, or just all around tinkerer, we want you! Please sign up your project on our sparkboard at http://hhsaskatoon2015.sparkboard.com/, so others may view it before the event for inspiration and to potentially join your team. If you haven't thought of one, that's okay! We take ideas right up until the pitches end Friday night. Note for mentors: If you are interested in mentoring teams during the event, please contact us at saskatoon@hackinghealth.ca for a free ticket.  Thank you for your participation, and we are excited to see you all out there! IBM/Sobeys Hackathon @ SMU
    02 Oct - 09:30 AM
    Halifax, Canada
A Retail Hackathon:  All of us purchase a huge variety of items from retail outlets: clothing, gifts, and of course, food.  With every grocery cart filled with fresh vegetables, cereal, and cans of soup, comes an incredible array of point of sale, services, supply chain, and customer data.   Sobeys - Helping Canadians Eat Better, Feel Better, Do Better - has compiled a huge, anonymized retail data set that participants will use for this analytics focused hackathon.   During the kick-off on October 2, teams will be introduced to retail challenges and data use-cases from Sobeys.  Participants will then learn about analytics and marketing techniques that will help them delve into the data.   Experts from IBM will provide access to IBM Bluemix, a next generation innovation platform, and provide tutorials on how to use Bluemix to create apps for the competition. Participants will also be introduced to IBM Watson, which can help teams find insights where no one ever thought to look before, using advanced analytics. We provide the data, software and training -  you generate the ideas.   Competition Categories 1. Retail Insights 2. BlueMix and Watson technologies 3. Business Innovations Over $9,000 in prizes will be awarded to the most innovative solutions.  The winning team will also be invited to a 2-day Bluemix Garage Design Thinking Workshop with Sobeys and IBM, valued at $15,000.  The workshop will focus on further developing the winning team's concept.  Judging Criteria: 1. Useful and intuitive app design 2. Robustness (does not crash) 3. Technical complexity - good use of general technology (database, web, mobile, cloud) - use of Bluemix and Watson (especially for IBM prizes)   4. You may have heard about RxJava or RxAndroid, a framework getting more and more attention. But what does it really do ? How can you use it and what could it bring to your application development ? Simon is a fan of the little green robot. After working a few years in the digital TV business, he quickly moved to mobile application development. He is now the manager of Sidereo in Montreal, an agency specialized in mobile applications and the Internet of Things. Intro to the Marshmallow Permission System by Philippe Breault and Etienne Caron The new Android Marshmallow permissions model is a big change for the platform. From now on, users will be able to decide exactly what permissions they want to allow applications to use. With this change comes a series of new challenges (and opportunities) for Android developers to handle (and explore). Bio: Hey There! My name is Philippe Breault, I am a software developer living in Montréal (Canada) and my job/hobby is Android. I have been working on the Android platform since 2010 and I hope that sharing what I have learned will help people get proficient in Android faster! Etienne is a software developer who's worked on all tiers (server, web, mobile and embedded) of large scale software platforms. He's been the Android team lead for PasswordBox, which was acquired by Intel Security in 2014. He is now Android team lead for TrueKey, Intel's digital identity manager.
