Partnering to Hack Homelessness (P2H²) is a weekend-long hackathon presented by Employment and Social Development Canada in collaboration with Datafest Ottawa. It’s an opportunity to apply your community knowledge, coding, design, and data visualization skills to do good for your community. The goal is to work alongside local organizations to prototype creative technology solutions for challenges faced every day by those who work to support people experiencing homelessness. As part of this in-person Ottawa-Gatineau hackathon you will:  Gain an understanding of homelessness issues in our city; Have the opportunity to disrupt these homelessness issues with your ideas and skills; Be challenged to think critically as you build something new and helpful; Meet, learn from and be inspired by creative, collaborative and caring folks like yourself. Schedule  1.    Friday, November 18 – Gather at the end of your day to hear challenge statements from local organizations working to solve homelessness. Network, form a team and enjoy some snacks.  2.    Saturday, November 19 – Greet your team and hack to it. Have the opportunity to hear from engaging speakers about technology and homelessness, and be fuelled throughout the day by hearty meals.    3.    Sunday, November 20 – Polish your project throughout the morning and put together a stellar presentation to explain and demo your team’s accomplishments to others, including a panel of experts.  FULL SCHEDULE Frequently Asked Questions When will the homelessness challenges be announced? Community organizations have told us about their most pressing challenges for us to hack. Without further ado here they are!  Who can attend? Attendance is open to everyone of all ages and backgrounds. We ask that participants under 16 be accompanied by an adult. First time hackathon participants are welcome! Everyone will have skills to bring to the success of this event. How are teams formed? Teams will form organically following problem pitches on Friday evening. Choose the project that appeals to you most and where you feel your expertise will be most valuable.  Must I attend the entire weekend? Try to be there for your team and commit to the event program. We understand that commitments and last-minute emergencies may prevent participants from hacking through the weekend. Are the travel fees or other expenses to be reimbursed? Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Hackathon. What should I build? Work with your community organization's problem to prototype a technology-based or innovative solution for the homelessness sector. Here are some criteria to keep in mind:  Impact – Does this solution have a real impact for its target audience? Is it scalable? Does it solve a stated problem of the community organization? Creativity – Is the solution novel? Does it approach the problem in a creative or never-seen-before way? Design – How well designed is this solution? Did the design process include the user?  Is it seamless for the user? Technical Achievement – Does this prototype a solution to a technical problem? What datasets are available for us to use? Homelessness is a complex issue, so we have access to a wide range of open datasets from all levels of government. We have started to gather open datasets and are approaching service providers to share their data as well. The Hackathon is open to everyone. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Registration to the Hackathon will be administered by Datafest Ottawa in partnership with the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS).  Registration will open at midnight EST Friday, October 14, 2016 on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum number of registrants for the Hackathon is 80. In the event that registration reaches 80, Datafest Ottawa will manage a waiting list and inform waitlisted registrants as spots become available. The Hackathon venue is TBD. The Hackathon begins on November 18th, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. EST and ends on November 20th, 2016 at 3:00p.m. EST. Participants may work on a team of one to eight people. Teams will be formed on the evening of November 18th following the problem pitch session. Teams may form organically. Latecomers may join a team the morning of November 19th. Computers are not provided, so participants should bring their own computer and other equipment, including power bars and Ethernet cables. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Hackathon. Participating in the Hackathon is free. Meals and soft drinks will be provided as noted in the Hackathon program on the website. Code of conduct All attendees, sponsors, partners, volunteers, and staff at our Hackathon are required to agree with the following code of conduct. Organisers will enforce this code throughout the event.  We expect cooperation from all participants to ensure a safe environment for everybody.  Our Hackathon (P2H²) is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, previous hackathon attendance or computing experience. Harassment of Hackathon participants, and the use of alcohol and illegal substances will not be tolerated. Offensive language and imagery is not appropriate at any Hackathon venue, including hacks, talks, workshops, parties, social media, and other online media. Participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the Hackathon at the discretion of the Hackathon organisers. Intellectual Property The intellectual property (IP) rights of hacks produced at the event belong to their respective teams and not to the organisers, sponsors, or partners. Participants are encouraged to use their own proprietary solutions to develop creative and efficient products provided you have appropriate legal permission. If you are representing a company, your company’s proprietary software assets are also allowed to be used with the appropriate permission from your organization. Please reference the Terms and Conditions data to confirm that all IP rights remain with the participant and/or the organization they are representing. Il s’agit d’une occasion de mettre en pratique vos connaissances de la communauté et vos compétences en codage, conception et visualisation des données au profit de la collectivité.   Collaborez avec des organisations locales pour créer des prototypes de solutions technologiques originales en réponse aux défis auxquels sont confrontés chaque jour ceux et celles qui interviennent auprès des personnes itinérantes dans la région de Gatineau-Ottawa. Dans le cadre du hackathon « Collaborer pour s’attaquer à l’itinérance» de la région Gatineau-Ottawa, vous: • comprendrez mieux les enjeux reliés à l’itinérance; • serez mis au défi d’adopter un raisonnement critique alors que vous construisez quelque chose de nouveau et utile pour les populations vulnérables; • aurez la possibilité d’ébranler ces enjeux reliés à l’itinérance au moyen de vos idées et compétences; • ferez la connaissance de gens créatifs, collaboratifs et bienveillants comme vous, dont vous apprendrez et qui vous inspireront. Calendrier des événements 1. Le vendredi 18 novembre - Réunissez-vous à la fin de la journée pour écouter les défis lancés par des organisations locales qui travaillent pour résoudre l'itinérance. Réseautez, formez une équipe et savourez quelques collations. 2. Le samedi 19 novembre – Saluez les autres membres de votre équipe et passez à l’action. Laissez-vous inspirer par d’excellents conférenciers qui parleront de technologie et d’itinérance et profitez de repas fortifiants qui seront servis pendant  la journée. 3. Le dimanche 20 novembre – Mettez les dernières retouches à votre projet le matin et préparez un remarquable exposé qui décrit les réalisations de votre équipe et en fait la démonstration aux autres équipes et à un panel d’experts.  Foire aux questions À quand l’annonce des difficultés en matière d’itinérance? Les organismes communautaires qui fournissent des services aux sans‑abri ou à ceux qui risquent de le devenir en sont à discerner et à énoncer les problèmes les plus urgents à résoudre. Vous en saurez plus à ce sujet à l’occasion d’une grande annonce à la fin du mois d’octobre! Qui peut participer? Tout le monde, peu importe votre âge ou vos antécédents. Les moins de 16 ans doivent être accompagnés d’un adulte. Les personnes qui participent à l’événement pour la première fois sont les bienvenues! Chaque personne possède des aptitudes qui contribueront à la réussite de cet événement. Comment les équipes sont‑elles constituées? Les équipes se formeront d’elles‑mêmes après la présentation des problèmes le vendredi en soirée. Optez pour le projet qui vous interpelle le plus et dans lequel vous estimez que votre savoir‑faire sera le plus utile. Dois‑je participer tout au long du week‑end? Tentez d’amener votre équipe à s’investir résolument dans le programme de l’événement. Nous sommes toutefois conscients que des engagements ou urgences de dernière minute peuvent empêcher les participants de s’investir durant tout le week‑end. Les dépenses, dont les frais de déplacement, seront‑elles remboursées? Les participants sont responsables de leur transport et de leur hébergement pour toute la durée du hackathon.  Que dois‑je développé? Penchez-vous sur le problème de votre organisme communautaire pour en arriver à un prototype de solution technologique ou novatrice qui est de nature innovante et utile pour l’organisme communautaire et ses pairs. Voici quelques critères à ne pas oublier :  Retombées – Cette solution comporte‑t‑elle des retombées concrètes pour ses destinataires? Est‑elle évolutive? Résout‑elle le problème énoncé par l’organisme communautaire? Créativité – Est‑ce une solution nouvelle? Permet‑elle d’envisager le problème de façon créative ou inédite? Conception – Dans quelle mesure la solution est‑elle bien conçue? Le processus de conception tient‑il compte de l’utilisateur? La conception est‑elle harmonieuse pour l’utilisateur? Réalisation technique – Est‑ce le prototype d’une solution à un problème technique? Règles En participant à l’hackathon, vous vous engagez à respecter les règles ci-dessous et les décisions des organisateurs. L’hackathon est ouvert à tous. Les participants de moins de 16 ans doivent être accompagnés d’un adulte en tout temps. L’inscription au hackathon sera administrée par Datafest Ottawa en partenariat avec la Stratégie des partenariats de lutte contre l’itinérance (SPLI) du gouvernement du Canada. L’inscription débutera le vendredi 14 octobre 2016 à minuit HNE et sera réalisée selon le principe du premier arrivé, premier servi. Le nombre maximal d’inscription au hackathon est de 80. Si le maximum de 80 inscriptions est atteint, Datafest Ottawa créera une liste d’attente et communiquera avec les personnes qui sont inscrites sur cette liste si des places se libèrent. Le lieu où se tiendra l’hackathon reste à déterminer. L’hackathon commencera le 18 novembre 2016 à 18 h HNE et se terminera le 20 novembre 2016 à 15 h HNE. Les participants peuvent former des équipes entre une à huit personnes. Les équipes seront formées pendant la soirée du 18 novembre, après la période de présentation des problèmes. Il n’y a pas d’autres règles particulières pour la formation des équipes. Les retardataires pourront se joindre à une équipe le matin du 19 novembre. Les participants doivent apporter leur propre ordinateur et tout l’équipement connexe, y compris les barres multiprises et les câbles Ethernet. Les participants sont responsables de leur transport et de leur hébergement. L’hackathon est gratuit. Des repas et des boissons seront fournis pendant toute la fin de semaine, comme l’indique le programme publié sur le site Internet. Code de conduite Tous les participants, commanditaires, partenaires, bénévoles et employés prenant part à notre hacketon doivent adhérer au code de conduite suivant. Les organisateurs l’appliqueront pendant toute la durée de l’évènement. Nous comptons sur la collaboration de tous les participants pour garantir la sécurité de tous. Notre hacketon (CAI) vise à offrir à tous les participants un milieu exempt de harcèlement, sans égard au sexe, à l’identité ou à l’expression sexuelle, à l’âge, à l’invalidité, à la taille, à la race, à l’ethnicité, à la nationalité, à la religion, à la participation à un hacketon précédent ou à l’expérience (ou l’inexpérience) en informatique. Nous ne saurions tolérer toute forme de harcèlement à l’endroit d’un participant au hacketon. Les propos et allusions offensif ne seront pas tolérés à aucun des évènements du hacketon, notamment les conversations, les ateliers, les rencontres, et dans les médias sociaux et autres médias en ligne. Les participants qui enfreignent ces règles seront passibles de sanctions ou pourront être expulsés, à la discrétion des organisateurs. Propriété intellectuelle Les droits de propriété intellectuelle (PI) rattachés à toutes les activités appartiennent aux équipes et non aux organisateurs, aux commanditaires ou aux partenaires. Nous encourageons les participants à utiliser leurs propres solutions exclusives afin d’élaborer des produits créatifs et efficients, pourvu qu’ils en aient obtenu la permission légale. Les participants représentant une société sont également autorisés à utiliser ses logiciels exclusifs s’ils en ont la permission en bonne et due forme.
