Smart Cities Housing Hackathon

What is the Smart Cities Challenge? The Smart Cities Challenge is a pan-Canadian competition open to communities of all sizes to use technology to solve a problem or pursue an opportunity that is important to the community. (co)space by Yukonstruct, the collaborative shared workspace for entrepreneurs, is leading a collaborative effort with the City of Whitehorse in this challenge, with support from the Government of Yukon.  Our first task was to identify challenge statements for the community’s consideration and selection. Community involvement is one of the criteria for the Smart Cities Challenge application. If successful, the application could earn the City up to $5 million, $10 million or up to $50 million to implement the solutions. This will be a public event where we will convene to: 1.   Understand Whitehorse' Smart Cities Challenge at a deeper level 2.   Identify ideas and potential solutions to this challenge 3.   Finding ways to bring these ideas and plans to life to achieve real and positive outcomes The goal of this hackathon will be to find potential technologicalsolutions to the availability and affordability of housing in Whitehorse.       What is Hoist? Hoist is a tech club for teens interested in coding, design or entrepreneurship. If you’re between the ages of 12-19 and have an interest in startups, tech or coding, then come check it out! Don't forget to bring your laptop and charger. If you do not own a laptop we have a limited number available for use! Hoist is normally held on the third Saturday of every month. March Topic: Virtual Reality Join Hoist Halifax for an exciting meetup in March. We will be bringing in Halifax VR for a lesson on virtual reality! Learn about all that VR has to offer, the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur in the virtual reality space and the latest industry developments. After a classroom style session, get the chance to practice your virtual reality skills with some playing time. For this session we have limited space available. If you're unable to come, please cancel your ticket ahead of time.  What Happens at Hoist? LearnLearn from experts in the business. The first half-hour will be a lesson from a pro on the topic of the day – App basics, coding (android/ios?) etc. LunchHave some free pizza with your new friends.         Toronto Baseball Hack Day Hackathon 2018

        Combine your love of code, design, big data, and baseball at the FIRST annual Baseball Hackday Hackathon in Toronto! This special one day The event will take place on March 17th, 2018 at the Think Research building and we will be hacking along with teams in Boston, Montreal, Chicago, and San Diego. We will all participate in the development of baseball-related projects and experiments to see if can make something awesome with technology. By participating, you will be part of a group that joins technology with sports and our hope is to bring technology and sports communities together. Using your creativity along with baseball, you can make, a web app, a mobile app, a web site, or data visualization. The majority of your coding must happen during the event. Some work done prior to the event is allowed, but it should be disclosed at your demo. Prototypes/mockups for demo are OK, but working websites or mobile apps are strongly encouraged. And afterwards, you'll get the opportunity to show your stuff to judges from the Blue Jays organization (and more)!  Designers, developers, statisticians, big data enthusiasts, and baseball fans are welcome to participate! We are looking for sponsors to help offset the costs of hosting our event and judges to evaluate the projects and then present the winning team with a grand prize. There is no cost to attend and participate in the event but there are limited spots so book early. The day will end with an award ceremony for the winning projects. This challenge will take place over the course of a single day.           $1 deposit gets refunded upon check-in Luiz Gustavo Ferraz Aoqui graduated in 2012 from University of São Paulo with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and has been working as a lead engineer for IBM Canada since 2013. His work is focused on software development in the areas of web, cloud, mobile and blockchain. He is the technical leader for the Cognitive Class learning platform and the Documentorum accreditation network. Documentorum is a global initiative focused on tackling the issue of fraud in academic accreditation. It leverages blockchain technology to build trust among educational institutions, government bodies, independent learners and employers. Each document that is issued is automatically verified and endorsed by the relevant parties and is permanently stored in the tamper-proof ledger within the blockchain, so its authenticity can be always guaranteed. In 2017, Luiz was part of one of the winning teams of ETHWaterloo, the world's largest Ethereum hackathon, with over 300 participants. The winning project was called Provt, a web application that allows anyone to upload a file's metadata to the Ethereum blockchain so it can later be used by any other person to verify its integrity and provenance.

She is a bold international entrepreneur accustomed to highly complex and pressured environments. Suzanne served Canada as an engineering officer in the Canadian Armed Forces and made her first foray into entrepreneurship by successfully bootstrapping a strategic communications agency and publishing house in a frontier market. Her clients have included Virgin Health Bank, Samsung, Accenture, HSBC, Carnegie Melon University, Fujitsu, Siemens and Shell, to name a few. Michel Paquet, an experienced leader with more than 20 years in technology, founded Aetonix Systems in 2014 focusing on improving communication and efficiency between patients and healthcare professionals. Prior to Aetonix, Mr Paquet was Engineering Vice-President at Wind River, a subsidiary of Intel for 7 years, leading the VxWorks product development.  Mr Paquet also occupied leadership position at IBM, Rational Software, and Nortel Networks. Susanne Rutherford and Caitlin Schwartz are Hacking Health Graduates who developed an app focused on preventative care for women. Their app organizes a custom wellness plan for women based on factors such as age and medication needs, and sets reminders for women to schedule mammograms and other crucial checkups.
