Esri Eastern Africa is hosting the GeoDev Meet up on August 24th, 2017; This is a “technical social" where developers can meet and discuss all things geospatial, geolocation, spatial analysis, and GIS. Developers of all levels of expertise are welcome.
This is the 4th of a series of workshops to get hands on experience with in advanced mapping technologies as a pre-requisite to the Esri Education User Conference hackathon.
The session will be a follow-up of our previous session which saw participants creating a web map service and a mobile app that uses that map service. August’s session will cover the following topics:
An in-depth look at the workings of a web mapping service and how to manipulate it
Creation of web applications that utilise web mapping services
Working with ArcGIS for Developers and getting started with GeoDev Lab packs.
Interactive Q & A session
Whether you are build mapping applications for the desktop, for the web, or for mobile devices, stop by and show us what you are doing. We welcome presentations and conversations around Esri's APIs, SDKs and tools.

Innovate Counties Challenge Hackathon - Kisumu #InnovateKisumu

Is there a missing link between local government and youth when it comes to advancing innovative ICT solutions for governance?
The Innovate Counties Challenge Project is sourcing ICT solutions created by Kisumu youth to solve challenges in relation to devolution, governance, service delivery, local economy, planning and youth activities within the county.
We are inviting tech-savvy, vibrant youth with an entrepreneurial spirit to LakeHub on 28th to 30th June 2017 to participate in the #InnovateKisumu hackathon. In 48 hours, you shall ideate and prototype your solutions for challenges our county is facing thereafter pitch your technical solution to a pre-selected jury. There are up to KES 150,000 worth of prizes to be won and a chance to be incubated for 4 weeks as you pilot the solution together with the County Government of Kisumu.
During the hackathon, you shall receive professional assistance from mentors and coaches in various fields to help you refine your idea and solution.
The focus areas of the hackathon are;
Local Economy
Local Governance
Service Delivery
Planning
Youth Activities
Feel free to propose any other thematic area you may wish to hack for.

Design & Internet Of Things (IoT) Hackathon

Foondi Workshops has teamed up with USIU-Africa and The Mekatilili Program to bring you an interactive design and electronics workshop on integrating Design Thinking with Internet of Things (IoT). This workshop is a great opportunity to learn how to designs water systems using human-centered design (HCD) principles developed at the Stanford d.school.
Participants will then learn how build prototypes using LEDs, sensors, LCD and a Wifi module that will enable them to control their projects remotely from the internet. Sounds cool?

UN Habitat and Swahili Box are giving the young people of Mombasa a chance to make their County and their City beautiful, resilient and the place to be.
Are you a creative problem solver? are you a patriot? Do you have ideas? Do you have products or services that you feel will help Mombasa achieve these things - then we are looking for you.
The hackathon will run for two days on May 20th and 21st - Judges will select promising ideas in each category who will undergo a one month coaching, mentorship and product support prior to receiving prizes.
