Digitisation has the potential to revolutionise the way 100 million smallholder farmers in Southeast Asia manage their plots and crops.  In Indonesia, oil palm cultivation has become important to rural livelihoods, particularly amongst smallholder farmers (“smallholders”). The focus of the Grow Asia Hackathon 2018 is independent smallholders, who account for 40% of the total oil palm area in Indonesia. It is critical that they become key players in the ongoing transition to a more sustainable oil palm value chain. We want to find solutions that will give smallholders better access to information, credit, and services to improve their livelihood and drive more sustainable outcomes.  That's where you come in.  Join us at the Pre-Hackathon Workshop (12 April) where you can learn about the palm oil ecosystem in Indonesia from the ecosystem stakeholders themselves. Also, learn about the challenges the smallholder farmers face. Find out how you can create solutions to make a difference and create a positive impact on their livelihoods. You can also meet like-minded innovators and entrepreneurs with whom you can collaborate at the Hackathon! Challenges 1. Data sharing: Data sharing - Many companies are addressing the issue of “traceability” - collecting, recording and analysing data on the plantations, farmers, and middlemen. How might we design a data application or platform and appropriate business models for the mutual benefit of the ecosystem actors and smallholders? 2.  Productivity: Low productivity is a key factor leading to smallholders growing larger areas of under-productive oil palm rather than intensifying production. The single most essential activity to increase smallholder productivity and efficiency is technical training and assistance.   How might we provide the right information and training to smallholders, improving productivity and aiding in sustainable intensification of plantations? 3.  Financing: Smallholders are often too small for commercial banks and too large for micro-finance schemes. They do not have credit history and cannot supply reliable management information to access finance. Their only option is to access informal credit, which comes with high interest terms and short tenure. How might we devise a new credit scoring mechanism for financial institutions to extend credit, and allow for incorporation sustainable practices along with this finance? 4.  Logistics: Smallholders who do not have their own means of transport rely on local traders or the closest mill and are subject to unforeseen weather conditions. How might we improve the timeliness of information and coordination of transportation options, so smallholders can make informed decisions?   -Organised by Nanyang Technopreneurship Center of Nanyang Technological University-   #startathon is a 30-hour intense innovation experience designed for programmers, engineers, entrepreneurs, business minds, product designers and makers to rapidly ideate, prototype and validate ideas.   Unlike traditional hackathons, #startathon emphasises learning and actualising. Several masterclasses are held during the event, on topics such as Internet of Things, Mobile App Development, Digital Fabrication, and Business Modelling. You will also be creating a prototype of your idea with the latest tools in open source hardware (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Particle Photon) and IoT development boards. There will also be equipment, tools and materials for traditional and digital fabrication, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and many more. Expect actual technology practitioners working side by side with your team to bring your prototypes to reality (not just 2 hour "mentorship" sessions)! *Workshop topics subjected to changes.   Registration starts at 8am!     FAQS What is the difference between #startathon and other hackathon? There are several key differentiating factors. #startathon integrates the rapid prototyping element into the originally software based hackathon. Tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, Arduino sets are brought for shared use. Instead of just having the Hackers and Business Guys, we also created a third group for Makers who have the hands-on skills to create the smart product. On top of all that, we have a series of masterclasses and its instructors will stay throughout the event to assist you. They are a group of passionate technology practitioners who would not just teach and leave.   Who can join this event? #startathon is open to all youths (35 years old and below) in Singapore! You may join #startathon with your friends from different schools.    Do I need to register for #ideastalk seperately? No, we have integrated #ideastalk into #startathon's 30-hour challenge. #startathon participants will be part of the #ideastalk conference.   What are the prizes? First prize - S$3000. Second prize - S$2000. Third prize - S$1000. While the cash prizes may be attractive, we hope that is it the learning experience and not the prizes that is the biggest attraction!    Do I need to have an idea ready before the event? Nearing to the event, we will release the challenge statements that you need to work on. You can brainstorm and ideate to prepare yourself for the hackathon. You may also can do this collectively with your friends or team members.   What do we are the problem statements we need to work on? We will provide several challenge statements for your team to select and then work on. This is to ensure that every team is on an equal playing field, with similar options and resources. Therefore, you may only develop innovative solutions that is addressing our specified challenge statements.   What is the duration of the event? Do I have to stay overnight? The event begins registration on Saturday, 17 March at 9am. It will continue for the next 30 hours until Sunday, 18 March at 3pm. Teams are encouraged to stay throughout the event in order to tap on the resources provided by our consultants and to allow sufficient time to complete your project. What do I need to bring? Yourself! That is the most important. A survival kit list will be provided to everyone who registered closer to the event date. Some items to bring will be laptop and its charger, power bank for your mobile phone, water bottle, jacket for the air-con, sleeping bag (maybe?), and writing materials. Please wear covered shoes to protect your feet and toes from dropping materials, equipments, and even hot glue! (NASTY) What resources are available for teams to use? All teams will have access to electronics prototyping kits which include development boards ( A choice of either the Arduino or the Particle Core/Photon), a basic sensor package (Temperature. Light, Distance, Heart Beat, Pressure) and a basic actuator package (Micro Servos, LEDs, Switches, Buzzer). You will also be able to loan additional electronic components from an on-site pop-up store. You are welcome to bring your own materials, sensors and tools to the event. #startathons are the only hackathons to have pop-up makerspace. There will be digital fabrication equipment (3D Printers, Laser Cutter), power tools (Dremel, Drill, Bandsaw, Sewing Machines etc), materials (Cardboard, Plywood, Polymorph) and design software made available. Perhaps the most important resource will be the Consultants. These are experienced professionals in the area of hardware electronics, software, fabrication and entrepreneurship who will be assisting teams throughout the duration of the hackathon (not just "mentoring" for two hours). Many past participants have credited their fantastic learning experience at #startathon to our awesome Consultants.  What masterclasses will be held during #startathon? We will having masterclasses on Spatial Prototyping, App Prototyping, Object Prototyping, Smart Object Prototyping and Business Prototyping. Must my idea be original? Can I just re-submit whatever I had done before? Our objective is for teams to generate new and innovative solutions during #startathon. Teams may come up with prior ideas but most of the execution/prototyping needs to be done during the event itself. How will we know this? Well, our consultants who will be with the teams throughout the day will be able to tell and if we become aware of such incidents, the teams involved may receive lower scores during judging. What do you mean by the Experiential Booth presentation format? Every team will be given a 1 metre by 1 metre floor space to create their experience booth. An experience booth should ideally allow a visitor to the booth to experience your smart nation concept in a tangible manner. The concept can either be a product or a service. Let your ideas run wild! You can see past examples of experience booths in this photo album. Do I need to have a team or can I register as an individual? Participants often sign up for #startathon as a team but if you're signing up as an individual, don't fret! We will have a team formation session right in the beginning where you can meet other like-minded individuals and form teams for the weekend with them. The minimum size for a team is 3 persons and the maximum is 5 persons. Every team must have at least 1 Coder, 1 Hustler, and 1 Maker.   How do I register as a team? You and your teammates may register for the event individually and declare yourselves as a group on the event day itself. We do not have group sign ups so that you can still change your group and members at the start of the event.
