Liberty Inforthenight (LIT Hackathon)
28 Oct - 12:00 PM
Belfast, United Kingdom
Liberty IT would like to invite you to Liberty Inforthenight, a 24-hour hackathon, taking place from 12pm Wednesday 28th - 12pm Thursday 29th October in our Belfast office. Liberty Inforthenight is open to any first year and second year student studying an IT related course from Ulster University, Queen’s University and Belfast MET.
In line with Liberty IT’s commitment to making a difference in our local community, the theme will be centred on developing innovative ideas and solutions for our NI charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support. These real-world challenges will focus on boosting their social media presence and engagement.
This event is all about creative problem solving and giving you the chance to come together with like-minded people for a fun filled 24 hours. Don’t worry – this isn’t about building a fully functioning app within 24 hours, it’s all about the ideation and innovation process and giving you the opportunity to dive into our challenges, further develop your skills, collaborate and learn something new – ultimately helping you with your IT studies in the future.
Using a development environment, you will work in teams of 2-4 individuals (predetermined by you or we can help match people to teams) and at the end, you will pitch your idea to be in with the chance of winning some great prizes and mentoring opportunities (take our word for it – you’ll not be disappointed!).
As a student, this is a great opportunity to get some real-world coding experience, spend time with experienced developers from Liberty IT, and potentially make a big difference to those living with cancer in NI. You don’t need to be the best coder in the world, we are looking for people who are creative, passionate about IT and want to further their own skills for the future.
Places are strictly limited so register today! As we anticipate a high demand, please do not register unless you fully intend to participate and can commit to attending the full event. If you know someone else who would be interested in attending, feel free to share!
Specific information on the event will be shared once registration has been received but in the meantime, if you would like further details, please email LITCommunications@liberty-it.co.uk
Good luck and looking forward to meeting you!

Vincent's World Famous Growth Hacking Talk
Yes it's happening, find out the growth hacks used by the best startups in the world!
London-based entrepreneur Vincent Dignan is to give an expanded version of his world-famous growth hacking talk, which was voted best session at SXSW V2V 2015 at IDEALondon October 26th.
There's a lot of terrible information in the social media/online marketing/growth marketing space. This workshop intends to deliver, in real-time, real value to startups/entrepreneurs attending; including how to quickly grow a community online, how to ensure your emails and tweets get seen/answered, creating easy workflows, content marketing and user acquisition. Startups/entrepreneurs who attend will leave with many practical methods that will be useful in executing a growth strategy (free) applicable to many industries, actionable immediately. This session will uncover the tips and tricks the big startups have used, as well as secret hacks Vincent has used with clients he has worked with at his agency, Magnific.
What you'll learn:
1. How to rapidly grow your social media communities and get free traffic/users/feedback from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
2. How to guarantee you'll be writing about the right areas in content marketing, and a step-by-step guide to writing interesting content
3. Best practice for distributing content so it gets seen by your potential users/customers
4. A brief outline of how to hack PR coverage, and some tactics to quickly boost your SEO
5. An overview of the most up-to-date tactics and software to enable efficient email marketing, sales, and productivity
6. How to build your marketing stack for just $9 a month
7. Everything you need to know about user experience in 90 seconds (yes, really)
Read what other people, who have seen this talk recently, have been saying about it at: Http://bitly.com/2015talks
Don't know Vincent? You should, and here's why:
London-based Vincent Dignan helps grow early-stage companies through a combination of rapid social media growth, guerrilla community management tactics, and growth hacks which have seen companies go from zero to thousands of signups/followers/users virtually overnight.
He founded planetivy.com & screenrobot.com. They have received nearly 20 million pageviews, while content he has overseen for other clients has received over 150 million page views so far. Last year his company, Magnific, beat 1500+ other startups to be accepted into prestigious accelerator Techstars London.
His company has driven thousands of followers, conversations, and signups for other startups, and his team of 750+ writers has written content for the likes of Mercedes, Burberry, Levi's, and Smirnoff. He has given talks at conferences and events around the world on content marketing, social media, growth hacking, and user acquisition. He currently teaches, mentors, or gives talks at conferences like SXSW & SXSW V2V, accelerators like Oxygen Accelerator, Techstars, Mass Challenge, and Barclays Accelerator, and teaches Digital Marketing at General Assembly. He has completed his first speaking tour of the United States, following universal acclaim in the U.K.

BrumHack
24 Oct - 10:30 AM
Birmingham, United Kingdom
BrumHack is a 24 hour student hackathon in Birmingham, running as a hack in the Major League Hacking UK Fall season. This will be BrumHack 3.0!
Attendees will have 24 hours (from 12:00 Saturday) to build something awesome, either in hardware or software. Hacks can optionally use sponsor APIs and platforms, and at the end of the 24 hour window people will have time to show either their hack, if it’s ready and working, or otherwise to talk a little about their ideas or what technology they used, what worked and what they had trouble with.
Hacks can be made alone or in teams of any size, but teams bigger than 4 people won't qualify for prizes. Teams can be decided at any point before submission and we’ll be having a session for matching up teams before we start, so if you’re unsure of who to work with, don’t be deterred.

Register your interest: The Oxford Energy Innovation Weekend - Fuel Poverty Hackathon
23 Oct - 05:00 PM
Oxford, United Kingdom
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO OCTOBER 2015! THE NEW DATE WILL BE DEFINED SOON!
The aim of this event is to get members of the student and alumni community working together on specific, immediate problems, and to come up with working prototype(s); supporting the on-going efforts in the field. The hackathon, on fuel poverty, will gather students from across the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes to develop innovative solutions. The theme of ‘fuel poverty’ encompasses a broad range of technical, economic and societal challenges. This will be The Oxford Launchpad’s third hackathon, following the successful Ebola hackathon in November 2014.
The hackathon, a fusion of the words “hack” and “marathon”, is an intensive, problem-solving event lasting typically 24 to 48 hours. Originally hackathons had coding and tech at their core (hence the name); however these days the term is used more widely, to denote the event’s nature and format, and the focus on innovation at speed. Tech continues to form an important component of many hackathons, but hackathons are no longer the realm of coders alone. They also seek to address interlinked social, economic and technical challenges. While British billionaires have doubled their wealth in recent years, 10% of the population suffer from fuel poverty. Fuel poverty is when people are unable to afford to heat their homes properly . They may have to choose between keeping warm and feeding their families. They may also suffer poor health and winter death due to cold homes. Fuel poverty is caused by a mix of low incomes (not having enough money to heat your home or afford energy efficient improvements), poor housing conditions (houses that leak heat, guzzle energy and cost more to keep warm), and high energy prices.
We already identified some possible solutions, but the problems persist. We need breakthrough ideas and action to eradicate it in a way which also meets our carbon reduction targets. Crucially, the output of the hackathon is not to just generate ideas, but to create demonstrable solutions within the hackathon timeframe, so register your interest whatever your background and be part of an innovating team!

Community Funding Hackathon: Trafford Housing Trust
20 Oct - 09:00 AM
Sale, United Kingdom
It is with great pleasure that we write to invite you to our Community Funding Hackathon, hosted by Trafford Housing Trust as part of the Community Funding review.
Taking place on 20th October 2015 at Sale Point in Greater Manchester, we’re bringing together a unique blend of social entrepreneurs, grant-specialists, housing associations, charity leaders and social investors to design new solutions and models for community funding and investment.
Each year our Community Panels distribute around £750,000 in grant funding to a wide range of community groups in Trafford. As Trafford Housing Trust and the community funding model reach their tenth year in operation, it is timely that both the delivery model and our understanding of community need are reviewed. Trafford communities have seen considerable change in the last decade, with the social, environmental, cultural and financial climate in which we operate transforming and changing the very nature of communities and community need.
We have identified you as one of the leading figures who can help us design funding models with potentially transformative impact and we’d be delighted if you could attend. Benefits of coming along include:
Participating in an innovative event that will have real community impact
Connecting with a unique and diverse group of attendees
A free Caribbean lunch (and drinks!)
We will also reimburse all reasonable travel expenses.
Please extend this invite to any colleagues who can bring additional expertise round the table. I very much hope you can attend and I look forward to seeing you soon.
FAQs
What is a Hackathon?
Put simply, a Hackathon is a focused session to innovate and problem-solve. The theme of this Hackathon, THT's second ever 'Hack', is Community Funding (grant making and investment). We don't expect to completely revolutionalise Community Funding in the space of a day (though if we do, great!). Whilst networking and building new business links, we hope to capture plenty of ideas and best practice and to produce a number of robust models which we can build upon to inform our review and proposals for the future.
What is the Community Funding Review?
Trafford Housing Trust’s five geographic Community Panels are reaching their tenth year in operation. We are reviewing our delivery model and our understanding of community need. Now, more than ever, we must be mindful of the value for money which we can deliver within communities in order to be a ‘force for good’ and meet evidence-based community needs. Our funding model, processes and priorities are being considered so that we can develop an increasingly robust model which will maximise the impact we can make within communities.
We want to be transparent, honest and open to new ways of working, building on the achievements of the last ten years. We want experts to join us for a Hackathon to capture innovation and best practice which will potentially transform our community model and maximise our community impact.
Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?
Please email communityfundingreview@traffordhousingtrust.co.uk
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, we'll have a list of attendees to register you at the event upon your arrival.
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
Yes, please just let us know who will be attending by emailing communityfundingreview@traffordhousingtrust.co.uk
@hackessex – 21st century volunteering
17 Oct - 09:30 AM
Chelmsford, United Kingdom
With a focus on doing not talking, hackathons are a collaborative way to solve problems – starting with an issue and collectively developing solutions. It’s all about practical creativity.
This Saturday hack takes a new look at volunteering and asks how can volunteering attract people who wouldn’t usually volunteer? We know that ‘volunteering’ can be a loaded term – with its connotations of charity shop shifts and regular commitment, it can turn off as many people as it attracts. Yet the evidence shows that volunteering benefits the volunteer just as much as it benefits those who the volunteer helps.
We want to understand what can be done to overcome obstacles to volunteering and what would make volunteering a more attractive proposition for more people. Hack participants will set their own agenda and create their own solutions – it’s your hack and your ideas. Remember, a hack is to be enjoyed, not endured – come along, eat pizza, try something different and see what you can achieve in a day.
Theme Collaborative Citizens
Who should attend People who work with charities; people who work in charities. People who volunteer; people who don’t volunteer. Citizens; technologists; designers; communicators; service design experts – anyone who is interested in trying a different way to create practical solutions.
About the hosts @hackessex Civic Camps are an approach that creates, in double-quick time, collective responses to societal challenges. We bring together people from all walks of life with an interest in getting stuff done. Our hacks are entrepreneurial in spirit, and are opportunities to problem-solve for all participants.
