Acorn Aspirations invites you to participate in #ACORNACCELERATOR2017 -- a 2-week accelerator, where you'll be challenged to create an innovative technical solution to a social problem that you find in your local community and communities around the world. You'll get to use tools and techniques like artificial intelligence, and virtual reality to help address problems such as depression, anxiety, stress, phobias and more. At the end of the accelerator, Acorn Aspirations invites your friends and the general public to the #AcornAccelerator2017 DEMO DAY, as you and your fellow participants demo your projects before a panel of judges.
One Day Seminar on Blockchains for Business Leaders & Non-Technical Users

This one day seminar is designed for anyone who wants to understand what blockchains are, what they are capable of and how they work. Technical content is not removed but explained in a way that non-technical people can understand. Specifically, the course will cover the following:
1 What is a Blockchain? 2 A framework for judging Blockchain use-cases 3 Bitcoin and Ethereum - how do they work? 4 Mining, Exchanges and how to invest in Crypto-currencies 5 What are smart contracts? 6 Public & Private chains, Hyperledger and R3 7 Use-cases of Blockchains studied in detail: - Energy - Digital Assets and Asset Management - Manufacturing and Healthcare - Insurance - International Supply Chain 8 Initial Coin Offerings - What is a token? - The history of ICO's - Regulation and problems 9 The Bitcoin fork and scalability 10 Building a PoC 11 When Blockchains go bad.
This is an interactive course designed to answer your questions about Blockchains and discussions are encouraged throughout the seminar.
Our Course Instructors:
Laurence Kirk
Laurence is a senior Blockchain Developer and Founder of Extropy.io. After a successful career writing low latency financial applications in the City of London, Laurence was captivated by the potential of Blockchain Technology, and in particular smart contracts. Two years ago, Laurence moved to Oxford and set up Extropy.io, a consultancy working with start-ups in the UK and overseas, developing applications on the Ethereum platform. He brings with him a wealth of real world experience that he loves to share with those new to this area in a way that business and non-technical users can understand.
Laurence hold a Physics degree from Durham University, and currently taking his MSc in Software Engineering at Oxford University. In addition to giving talks, mentoring at hackathons, and running groups about Blockchain Technology, Laurence also organise Artificial Intelligence and Data Science groups in Oxford.
Stephen Jackson
Stephen has been a professional Software Developer for 10 years. During that time, Stephen has worked at some of the world’s largest companies and gained a breadth of experience; from developing websites that are clicked on millions of times per day through to working on applications that help Portfolio Managers manage portfolios containing $100's million of assets.
Stephen first became aware of Bitcoin and Blockchain Technology at the end of 2013 when it was thrust into mainstream news as it reached, then, unprecedented highs. From that point in history, he has been researching more into the underlying technology and attending Blockchain Hackathons and workshops. At the beginning of 2017, Stephen joined a leading Blockchain Consultancy called Extropy.io working with international clients, where he has been helping to produced research papers about ICO regulation and digital currencies, write, build and deploy Smart Contracts and create web-based Decentralized Applications.

Antonio has 10 plus years experience working closely with global Investment Banks placing highly skilled eTrading Technology professionals. Both computer scientists and biologists are welcome, and strong computing experience is not a neccessity. Come and join other attendees before the conference itself!
Educate and Entertain Hackathon Brief:
The Hackathon theme this year is Public Engagement.
In teams of up to four people, come up with an innovative and exciting way to educate and entertain the general public on the crossover between biology and computer science. This could be anything from sequencing to medical applications.
Please bring along anything you think you will need for your hackathon project, including laptops etc.
There will be a prize for the best team and pizza and drinks available on the night.
Location: Theatre Bar, Aberystwyth Arts Centre.
Times: 6pm onwards.
