ShfWIT - We're coding but not just coding
20 Nov - 05:30 PM
Sheffield, United Kingdom
We launched in June and then met again in August - with #TechTea beginning in September.
November will be the start of events every two months where we'll begin to put into action what we've learnt from Sheffield women in technology so far. Each event will have time to chat and and, if networking isn't your thing and sends a shiver down your spine, don't be put off! There'll be friendly faces looking forward to saying hello and introducing you to people.
What will the event involve?
17.30 Doors open for drinks, snacks and chat.
18.00 Talks start (see below for more details).
19:30 Over to you. Please bring along any Sheffield women in tech news you have to pass on, events to advertise, questions to ask or ideas to share.
There'll be time for more drinks, snacks and chat until we close at 20.00
No, I fly them - Shehla Ali
Shehla Ali is a freelance digital marketeer, drone photographer and a Google Digital Garage trainer. Shehla also runs Cameratic, a blog she created to showcase her photography, filming and copy writing, as well as Drone 360, where she creates aerial photography.
Shehla will talk about her rollercoast ride since quitting her job two years ago to work remotely and travel. Since then she has set up multiple companies, further developed her knowledge of technology and experienced working in male dominated environments. If you're a budding creative who doesn't know where to start or more experienced but stuck in your comfort zone, this talk may give you a quiet and gentle push to start moving.
A series of fortunate blags - Tanya FIsh
Tanya Fish has been enthusing about science and making in some form or other for most of her life. She's written tutorials, magazine articles, and educational materials. She's talked about making to all sorts of audiences, including the Guild of Makers Launch, Hackaday Unconferences, and at Maker Faires. She runs workshops at festivals, conferences, and universities; and has just ventured into YouTube.
In this talk, Tanya explains how being out of your depth is an advantage, how you are worth more than you think and how there is no such thing as modesty when you're bigging yourself up.
Coding and hackathon(ing) - Kat Walker and Darren Vong
Kat Walker is a Computer Science student and demonstrator at Sheffield University and a Code First Girls Instructor. Darren Vong is a Full Stack Developer at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and a lead instructor at Code First Girls.
In this talk, Kat and Darren will talk about their experiences supporting Code First Girls and attending hackathons. If you've ever wanted to learn to code or develop your coding knowledge, attend a hackathon (or aren't sure what a hackathon is) but have never had chance to ask questions in advance, tonight may be your night.
The small but important print
Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to work in digital right now, you don’t have to identify as a woman, you don’t have to know how to code or how to explain bitcoin. You do have come in, be open and ready to participate in bringing about positive change.
Babies and children are welcome to attend with a (vaguely) responsible adult. If you can’t make the event and would like to be kept updated, sign up to our mailing list or follow and join in on Twitter @ShfWIT.
Kindly sponsored by Egress.

UKRI Cloud Working Group Technical Workshop
20 Nov - 09:30 AM
London, United Kingdom
The UKRI Cloud Working Group (https://cloud.ac.uk/) is organising a technical workshop “unconference”. Following feedback from our annual cloud workshop in January, some members of the community expressed the desire to have a technical deep dive into some of the topics. We have created this event to provide just this opportunity and enable researchers, devops and developer to work together and share collective experience.
We’re adopting an "unconference" format, which means other than 2 talks (Stig Tefler from StackHPC and Martin O'Reilly from the Turing Institute), we won’t have a fixed agenda ahead of time: everyone will be invited to give a short pitch at the start of the day on a technical topic of their choice. We will then vote on those they want to devote time to explore in depth. We’ll have several breakout type rooms available so we can discuss several topics if necessary. Different approaches could be applied for each topic, for example
a hackathon where groups can focus on solving a specific problem or creating a piece of software or infrastructure configuration, or
information sharing and pooling expertise with a technical deep-dive walk through a particular technology.
Topics could cover anything from use and deployment of OpenStack, container technologies, integration of storage, application of services and API from public clouds, tools for monitoring and logging or your other suggestions.
Who should attend?
Those people who have a technical interest in deploying cloud and cloud related services to support research workloads. You will also have some experience of coding and/or using cloud computing infrastructure. You should also be prepared to get involved in the sessions and discussion including leading topics.
What do you need to bring?
Make sure to bring a laptop!
Tea and coffee will be provided in the breaks but you will need to buy or bring your own lunch.

YES BALL GAMES Hacking Barking and Dagenham’s open space for social sport and play
17 Nov - 09:00 AM
Barking, United Kingdom
After the amazing social cohesion hackathon that took place last year, Digilab and lbbd, in partnership with London Sport, are running an event to solve the challenge of unused and empty spaces in Barking and Dagenham.
We’ve seen the countless signs for ‘No Ball Games’ on grass and streets that prevent people from interacting outside in areas around their homes, schools and businesses. What if there was a solution to open up these green and grey spaces for social sport, play and interactivity in the community?
This is the theme of the YES BALL GAMES hackathon 2018. It’s time to take back the streets of Barking & Dagenham – can you help us solve this challenge?
If you are a local resident or business, digital innovator or coder, then please sign up to our event and make change happen! And win £250 towards your idea / prototype and support from mentors and the SportTech ecosystem.
Venue: Digilab, Barking Learning Centre, 2 Town Square, Barking, IG11 7NB
UCL Porticode 3.0[MLH]
17 Nov - 08:00 AM
London, United Kingdom
UCL Techsoc x MLH
Porticode is a 24-hour beginner-friendly event run by the UCL Technology Society, where you'll be given all the workshops, tools, mentors and snacks you need to create new and interesting ideas. These kind of events are also known as hackathons, but don't worry! This isn't about hacking into banks or shops, but rather about creating something you think is interesting, life changing, or just plain ridiculous. What can you make? As long as you can build it with the tech that we have available (as well as any you want to bring), and you can do it in one day, then it's fair game. Your project could be useful for the real world or it can have no use at all!Once the 24 hours are over, you'll be given the opportunity to show off what you've done in a 'science fair' style setting, and also the chance to demonstrate your creation in front of other attendees.During the weekend, we'll also be holding mini-events and games, to give you a break from your projects.

Leeds Blockchain Hackathon 2018
17 Nov - 08:00 AM
Leeds, United Kingdom
The first Leeds Blockchain Hackathon is here, and you’re invited.
#LBH2018 is the ultimate event for learning, hacking and networking for teams of budding coders, developers, tech enthusiasts and people from all areas of the vibrant tech community in Leeds. If you're a newbie, don't panic! There will be technical experts on hand to help you build your project.
Oh and, we're bringing for the beer and pizza. For 48 hours!
So, what is a hackathon, and why blockchain?
Hackathons are premier start-up incubators where disruptive, breakthrough ideas come to life in a myriad of ways. These are engaging events where teams of developers collaborate, sharpen their skills and bring their ideas to life.
We've all seen cryptocurrency mania in the news, but what else can we use this technology enable? What is beyond currency? Are there new networks and relationships could we create in a world where blockchain means untrusted devices can co-operate in predictable ways?

PROJECTS
We are interested in projects that do good things. Does your idea mean greater access to technology? Does your idea tackle a real world problem facing ordinary people? Is your idea accessible?
To give you a headstart, our conversations with Leeds City Council have given us these "starters for ten":
1) Improvements to Housing Standards and Growth - e.g:
- Capture, trade and pay for energy consumption across the councils housing stock
- Manage occupancy and rental of council properties with greater efficiency
2) Greener and More Effective Travel and Transport - e.g:
- More effective collection and payment of parking fees, tolls and/or Congestion Zone tariffs
- Provide secure, unhackable and auditable open data that can be used to plan and manage traffic movement
3) Increased Health and Wellbeing - e.g:
- Provide secure, unhackable and auditable patient data wherever it is needed
- Record stocks, transfers and usage of controlled medicines
4) Environmental and Climate Improvement - e.g:
- Trading of carbon or other credits to offset environmental impact
- Provide secure, unhackable and auditable climate data wherever it is needed
5) Enable and Support Smart City Initiatives - e.g:
- Trading city centre sensor data for value in a smart city economy
- Providing solutions for a city of the future with autonomous transportation and other IOT based services
6) Reduce City Council Costs - e.g:
- Removing the need for intermediaries in data collection and payment systems
- Provide secure, open council data without the need for complex systems and solutions
Remember you are welcome to work on your own project outside these ideas. These are just nudges.
