Machine Learning Hackathon

Agile Scientific and The UK Oil and Gas Authority invite you to take part in the UK's first hackathon for subsurface scientists! There's also an optional Bootcamp for those new to programming.
The theme is Machine Learning. As part of a teams of 6 participants, you will find a project to work on, then spend the weekend working on a prototype web app, proof of concept service, or machine learning model — or whatever you think will bring your idea to life.
Geologists, geophysicists, petroleum engineers, mathematicians, interpreters... all are welcome. Whether you've been coding for 2 hours, 2 years, or 20 years, you'll fit right in. Let's solve some hard problems in the subsurface!
NOTE: When you register, you will have the option of adding the BOOTCAMP to your order. The Bootcamp will run from about 8:30 am until 4:30 pm on Friday 16 November.

Oh and did we mention that there are prizes for the winning teams? That’s right, there is a prize pool of 2000 GBP awaiting to be shared amongst the dreamers and doers!

In case of huge demand for the tickets, we reserve the right to select the participants based on the fit to the challenge in accordance to the answers provided through the registration form.

FAQ
DO I HAVE TO BE PROGRAMER OR DESIGNER TO TAKE PART?
No! We welcome everyone to apply to this hackathon, regardless of their skills and experience. The event is not a typical coding hackathon, but is rather oriented towards solving a business challenge.
WHEN DOES THE EVENT RUN?
Registrations open at 8:00AM and the event starts at 9:00AM sharp and includes working lunch
WHO CAN APPLY?
Ambitious, career-oriented and creative young individuals (18+) that are currently enrolled in full- or part-time study program at any university or starting a new career. Undergraduate and post-graduate, as well as executive MBA students, subject matter experts, academics, entrapreneurs are also welcome to attend this event.
IS THERE A SELECTION PROCESS?
Yes, we'd like to create cross-functional diverse teams to compete in the hackathon, which is why we will be selecting the participants and letting you know as soon as the applications are reviewed.
DO I NEED A TEAM TO REGISTER?
No. We are looking for individual participants who will be later placed in inter-disciplinary teams (4-6 members) to solve the challenge during the event. But make sure to invite your friends and colleagues to join as well. There will be plenty of networking and socialising opportunities.
IS THERE A FEE TO PAY?
Yes, there is 10GBP fee per person to participate. The fee is set to help us ensure the participants who register also attend the event. Food, drinks and awards will be provided, as well as inspiring venue with magnificent view to river Thames.
ARE THERE PRIZES?
Yes! A collection of pretty amazing prizes is waiting for the winning teams!
2000 GBP pool of prizes for the two winning teams. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
WHAT WILL I EAT?
We’ll provide food, drinks, snacks and a lot of coffee leaving you to concentrate on your project.
IS THIS AN OVER-NIGHT EVENT?
No. The event will run from 8am to 6pm on Friday.

WHEN DO APPLICATIONS CLOSE & WHEN WILL I FIND OUT IF I AM SELECTED?
Applications are now open and will close on Tuesday 13 November 2018 at midnight. Applicants will be notified on first register- first notified basis the latest on 14 November 2018 but generally at least a week earlier.

What is a hackathon?
Hackathons aren't about breaking into things! They're about bringing people together to create amazing things using computers. We think it's really sad that some people have never been to a hackathon or had proper fun with computer science, so we want to give you the opportunity to explore and play about in the creative, exciting world of technology.
Who
Girls aged 5 all the way up to 22.
Parents/Guardians. If you're under 16, you'll need to have an adult with you. On the plus side, we'd love it if they helped out with making your game or app!
Women (and Men) with a STEM background and are interested in inspiring the next generation. (see below for more details)
When
Saturday 10th November 10am-5:00pm
Where
We'll be on site at the Department of Health and Social Care. Upon arrival, report to reception to be registered and directed to the Hack.
What you need to bring
Yourself and any great ideas you have.
If you have access to headphones, please bring them with you.

Are you interested in helping young people learn to code and discover making?
We are looking for adults who have a STEM background to help the girls learn to code in HTML, Appshed and Appinventor tools and show them the range of possible careers you can do after studying STEM subjects.
All you need to do is provide inspiration and help the girls with their projects when they get stuck.
We will provide food and reasonable transport costs to helpers.
