        Campaign Lab VI HackDay
        23 Feb - 10:30 AM
        London, United Kingdom
Please note - you will need to bring a laptop to this event Since June 2018 we've been a busy bunch, the Campaign Lab community has sourced hundreds of demographic and austerity impact datasets, developed scrapers and written parliamentary questions and FOIs to source the more hard to get datasets. We've built a comprehensive UK ward-level election results dataset and begun comparing factors impacting elections across the country. But we're not finished yet. Come and join us for our next hackathon as we continue to build the case for an evidenced-based approach to electoral campaigning in the UK. What is Campaign Lab? Thousands of activists across the UK volunteer their time and energy for electoral campaigns every year. Year in, year out, we use the same campaigning methods and tools we always have, because we think they work. But there have been very few contemporary analysis or studies undertaken to assess the impact or value of electoral campaigning methods in the UK. Similarly, there have been precious few attempts to determine the effect of local economic factors such as house prices and austerity on election results and vote share. So, if no one else has done this, then maybe it’s about time we started? We’re building a repository of publicly available data and models to better understand the 2018 Local Elections, identifying which results bucked the national political and demographic trends. These are areas in which local campaigning may have actually made a difference and where we can start learning and testing. This is about developing an evidence-based approach to electoral campaigning. But we need your help. So if you’re interested in chipping in and developing a new data-driven approach to understand what actually goes on in elections and campaigning, bring your laptop and join us for a day of politically motivated data science. Over the course of our new hackdays we'll be tackling the questions plaguing activists up and down the country, making a real impact on elections and political campaigning right across the country. Check out the Campaign Lab volunteer teams and project guide You will need to bring a laptop to this event Everyone welcome – beer, soft drinks, a big homemade soupy lunch and pizza dinner will be provided! Not been to a Campaign Lab meet up before? No problem! Come along to meet politically-minded progressive data scientists, reasearchers and activists who are working together to change the way we analyse and understand political election campaigning. All attendees to Campaign Lab HackDays may join future discount data science courses put on specifically for Campaign Lab volunteers - contact us for more information.
Hacking the Past: An Archives Game Jam
          23 Feb - 09:30 AM
          London, United Kingdom
The National Archives in collaboration with the Bentham Project, University College London are coming together to create a game jam, focusing on games with a purpose (GWAPs). These organisations have experience of crowdsourcing the transcription of historical documents with the assistance of interested volunteers.  They have also been experimenting with the use of Handwritten Text Recognition software to automate the transcription of documents. However, the transcription of historical material can still be a time-consuming and complex task. The challenge for this Hackathon is to create imaginative and engaging games that encourage and help people to transcribe documents efficiently. These transcriptions will open up access to historical material  and make them discoverable for anyone interested in historical research. As a team you will be invited to create exciting games based on digital images from a diverse range of historical collections at both The National Archives and University College London.     Programme Saturday 23 February   09:30 - 10:00 Registration 10:00 - 10:15 Welcome and introduction Francesca Mackenzie (The National Archives) and Louise Seaward (UCL Bentham Project) 10:15 - 10:30 UCL Centre for Digital Humanities Simon Mahony (UCL Centre for Digital Humanities) 10:30 – 11:00 Historical documents at The National Archives Chris Day and Ruth Selman (The National Archives) 11:00 - 11:15 The Bentham collection Louise Seaward (UCL Bentham Project) 11:15 – 11:30 Icebreaker 11:30 – 13:15             Hacking 12:00 – 13:00 Introduction to Twine (tool for telling interactive non-linear stories) workshop Faith Lawrence (The National Archives) 13:15 – 14:00 Lunch 14:00 – 18:00 Hacking 14:00 - 14:30 Palaeography workshop (optional) Chris Day, Francesca Mackenzie and Ruth Selman (The National Archives) 18:00 – 18:45 Pizza 18:45 – 20:00 Hacking 20:00 Day closes   Sunday 24 February 09:00 – 13:00 Hacking 13:00 – 13:45 Lunch 14:30 Submission deadline 15:00 – 16:00 Teams present to judges (5 mins + 5 mins Q & A) 16:00 – 16:30 Judges deliberate 16:30 Winners announced 17:00 Event closes     FAQs What are the specific timings for the event? A hackathon is an opportunity to meet people with wide ranging skill sets, learn, collaborate and create projects. Throughout the hackathon there will be talks and workshops with opportunities to learn more about paleography and technology. Most importantly it’s fun! Getting here Base KX is about a 10 minute walk from Kings Cross Station and 15 minutes from Camden Town. Who can attend? Everyone! If you have lots of creative ideas, a flair for the artistic, skills in technology and development, are interested in games or just love heritage and archives this is the event for you! Participants should be over 18 (but send us over an email beforehand if you’re under 18 and want to join anyway) Do I need to bring anything? It is strongly recommended that you bring a laptop. Other than that just yourself. Will there be food and drink? Food and drink will be provided throughout the day and evening, some of which will include pizza. Can I stay the night? Michael Clouser started his first company, a marketing firm, during his undergraduate years and sold it in 1990. After turning around 4 hotels as a general managerin his early career, he started and exited from an internet travel company between 1994-1996. He returned to Ithaca and Cornell to CEO a miniconglomerate, incubator, and student venture capital fund at Student Agencies Incorporated, a USD 25 million corporation that is America’s oldest student-run such entity. During his last year as an MBA student he founded ILodging, Inc, and moved this internet B2B to Silicon Valley where he ran it to revenue stage until 2000, when he joined Dot Edu Ventures as an Associate. Starting another 2 companies during this time himself, he moved to Edinburgh to lead entrepreneurship education at the Edinburgh - Stanford Link in 2004. During the next 7 years, besides lecturing MSc and PhD students at the University, he would start another 2 companies, including one with a former student. Spending the next 5 years in Western Canada and lecturing in entrepreneurship there as well, he started a new venture consultancy in Vancouver that was spun out of a well - known media firm and incubator, Invoke, from whence Hootsuite was born. Michael has cofounded a total of 10 companies to - date, in addition to serving as a venture capitalist and incubator CEO. He has reviewed thousands of business plans and pitches from entrepreneurs and is a believer in a scientific approach to starting and growing companies. James Shoemark began his career with an engineering apprenticeship with Ferranti’s in Edinburgh but preferred working with people rather than machines and so started working for the outdoor pursuit’s organization, the Drake Fellowship. Five years’ experience of using mountaineering as a personal - development vehicle enabled him to coach over 500 unemployed young people into developing their self-confidence and leadership abilities. This led James to teaching outdoor pursuits and leadership development in the United States of America in 1988. After an adventurous period working as a self - employed motorcycle courier in Los Angeles, he saw an opportunity to start a business importing classic Japanese motorcycles from the US to the UK in 1989 and managed to persuade The Royal Bank of Scotland to fund his business which he ran for three years until market and tax conditions changed. On return to the UK, James undertook a Business Administration HNC at Stevenson’s College Edinburgh and worked for the Credit Control division at The Bank of Scotland. He again realized he wanted to work in personal development and completed a degree in Community Education at the University of Edinburgh. On graduation, he secured the management position of a Lottery funded motorcycle project in East Lothian. James grew the user base from 12 participants a year to over 100 and revenue funding from £2,000 to over £110,000 in 5 years. After this he started a property maintenance business in 2005 to exploit the property boom. After several years, he realized he wanted to work with people again and trained as a professional life coach just as the financial crash of 2008 hit. He saw an opportunity to run peer - mentoring groups called Business Masterminds for Entrepreneurs struggling to cope. This introduced him to a software developer who became his CoFounder in a personal development platform called InverLife. After two years, he realized that they had made several mistakes such as overcomplicating the business model and spent too long in development with little customer validation and closed the company down. He then established a local organization called Heroic Entrepreneurs in 2013 and started running events sponsored by Maclay Murray and Spense that brought local startup founders into contact with successful Entrepreneurs and Investors such as Leah Hutcheon, Ian Ritchie and Jackie Waring. This led him to meeting a couple of likeminded entrepreneurs who wanted to gamify the startup process and after a couple of months using a Lean Canvas to validate a couple of key hypotheses and identify their business model, they formed The Startup Race Ltd in 2017. Since then they have run over 100 local entrepreneurial events with over 1,000 entrepreneurs and investors attending.
                  Project:Hack February 2019
                  23 Feb - 09:00 AM
                  London, United Kingdom
Welcome to the second Project Data Analytics Hackathon  - Project:Hack. Bigger and better with £1,000 worth of prizes.  Would you like to help to shape how projects are delivered in the future?  You'll have an opportunity to work with others who share this vision and passion. You'll also get the opportunity to influence some major players such as Highways England, Sir Robert McAlpine and the team from the UK's largest road construction project.  We are working on other datasets too and hope to annouce more details in the coming weeks.  Data science will transform how projects are delivered, saving billions for society, improving certainty in outcomes and changing the face of the project management profession forever. Project:Hack aims to: Explore methods and tools to transform how insights and value can be extracted from project data. Ranging from risk and schedule data through to on site presence of personnel. Enable delivery professionals to understand the predisposition of projects to specific challenges, to predict them arising and take action to avoid the avoidable. Ignite the professional imagination on what can be achieved and shape the future of project delivery.  Themes & Challenges? The brief is to deliver innovative solutions around project delivery themes. We have 3 sets of data so far and are working on more. We'll load the data onto Azure and provide free Azure passes for the weekend, courtesy of Microsoft. Firstly, a variety of sets of data from the A14, the UK's largest road construction project, spanning risk data, health & safety, weather data, schedules. Secondly, Sir Robert McAlpine have collated data from some of their projects including sustainability and turnstile data. Thirdly, we have scraped, acquired and collated a library of data from Australian ICT projects, US IT projects, UK Government major projects portfolio and some ideas on maturity modelling. Some of this data is a by-product of delivery and is archived after the project is delivered, but it has the potential to help shape the delivery of future projects. How can we extract this value, how can we use the data to help shape future projects and how can we use it to avoid the mistakes of the past?  Fees We had 50 no-shows on the last event. This means that people who wanted to come couldn't, we had to throw away a lot of food and it reduced the richness of the event. To reduce the likelihood of this happening again we will be charging a nominal fee of £10 a ticket. All of the money raised will go to Cancer Research, less eventbrite fees and VAT.   Let’s get started! We'll start the day by introducing the challenges and the data sets. You'll then have the opportunity to pitch your idea to the crowd to invite team members, or join a team whose idea you want to work on. You'll then spend two days developing the concepts, interrogating the data, building proof of concepts and delivering a solid pitch to support it. Finally, you'll get the opportunity to present to industry experts who will judge your proposal. Not only will you have the kudos associated with shaping the future of project management, but we also hope to be able to award prizes too.  Happy to support you! There will be on-ground support. Data scientists, PowerBI experts and subject matter experts will help you with technical queries and mentors will guide you towards the perfect pitch.  It promises to be a great couple of days will be had with food, drinks, ideas and bucket loads of fun. The only requirement is to come with a lot of bright ideas and enthusiasm! Space is limited, so please fill out this quick profile and we will get back to you as soon as we have reviewed the attendee submissions.   FAQs What do I need to bring to the event? Your laptop, access to any software that you are likely to need and bucket loads of enthusiasm.  Am I guaranteed a place?  We'll do our best to accommodate everyone, but the event is likely to be oversubscribed. We'll need to ensure we have a good balance of expertise. Priority will be given to members of the London Data Analytics community. If you booked last time and didn't show up then you may struggle to get into this event because its not fair on those who genuinely want to come.  How will my ideas be managed? Your ideas belong to you. Its your intellectual property. But we encourage all attendees to share their code for the benefit of the community wherever possible.  How will my personal data be used? Purely for the administration of this event, future events and any agreed follow up actions. It will not be used for any other purposes.
