FAQs
What's the difference between the tickets?
Startupthon is similar to a 3-Day Startup or Startup Weekend, where you will specifically work on an idea with a team over the weekend. It's a less technical hackathon, for people who want to test their ideas or have an authentic startup building experience. The goal is to get as far as you can in 52 hours, and present to a panel of judges and the audience on Sunday afternoon. Meals will be included because we want you to focus.
Bootcamp is more like a festival. You come to learn (30+ workshops and panels), network, get pampered, and have fun. Other than the awesome new knowledge, skills and connections, you will also enjoy our open bar, food trucks, live music, and free hair / makeup / headshot / massage !
The free ticket is only valid for admission after Sunday Sep 27 at 2:30pm. It includes a remark from LA Mayor's office, a keynote from Dr. Sabrina Kay, and the Startupathon final presentations.
The VIP ticket gets you priority appointments for the complimentary beauty services, reserved seating at workshops/panels, and a special gift bag. You can also receive a 15-min one-on-one coaching opportunity with a mentor at the event. Email pocket@sogalventures.com to schedule.
Startup booths are great for companies to showcase products/services, and interact with potential customers.
Who can attend?
We encourage everyone interested in entrepreneurship, technology, and startups to join the party! You will meet top leaders, experts, founders, investors, and mentors throughout the event! If you for some reason cannot afford a ticket, we do have scholarship opportunities thanks to 500 Startups. Email elizabeth@sogalventures.com to apply.

Countering Violent Extremism: Defining Current Challenges and Necessary Solutions #peacehackDC opening session
25 Sep - 09:00 AM
Washington, United States
Violent extremist groups present a major challenge to global peace and security. Violent extremists are individuals who support or commit ideologically-motivated violence to further political goals. Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) encompasses the preventative interventions to undermine the attraction of extremist movements and ideologies that seek to promote violence. CVE efforts address the root causes of extremism through community engagement and outreach.
We are welcoming a panel of speakers who will discuss the challenges facing the CVE community today with the rise of extremist groups, such as ISIS, who are skillful in their use of technology for recruitment and radicalization. Panelists will discuss what types of solutions are working today to counter the efforts and narratives of extremist groups and what is needed to make CVE efforts more effective.
This panel serves as the opening session for #PeacehackDC. #PeacehackDC is a 36-hour hackathon where teams of software developers, designers and peacebuilding experts will work together to develop technology solutions to counter violent extremism. Participants are being challenged to devise creative solutions that can counter the messaging and recruitment of extremist groups and, as a result, help mitigate violence and build peace.

Peacehacks are taking place in Barcelona, Beirut, Colombo, Derry, London, Medellin and Washington, DC. All the hackathons will focus on developing groundbreaking ideas for using technology to build peace in cities, while exploring the challenges particular to each urban context – for example violent extremism in London and DC and migration in Barcelona.

Making science more reproducible has enormous potential to accelerate scientific advance. For computation-heavy research, which is increasingly pervasive across the sciences, this is particularly true, and yet is often seen as difficult to achieve. In this 2-day bootcamp-style hands-on workshop, we will teach a number of tools, resources, and practices that can be employed today to make one's computational science more reproducible.
