Chi Hack Night
19 Nov - 06:00 PM
Chicago, United States
The Chi Hack Night is a free, weekly event in Chicago to build, share and learn about civic tech and tools to create, support, or serve public good.
Join us every Tuesday from 6-9:30pm on the 8th floor of the Merchandise Mart to hear from interesting speakers, learn from each other and work on civic projects. Non-techies are very welcome!RSVP before noon the day of the event is now required. Walk-ins will unfortunately not be allowed.
What happens at a hack night?
Every week, we have a 10-15 minute presentation by a government agency, non-profit, company or group who've made use of open data or built a civic technology application. The goal of these presentations is to showcase the different uses and opportunities, as well as challenges and successes in the civic technology movement.
After the presentation, the format of the event is similar to that of a hackathon where breakout groups self-organize to work on civic apps, discuss policies and their implications, learn technical skills and network with a welcoming and diverse community at the intersection of technology and government.
But I'm not a techie!
That's ok! We encourage non-technical folks to pair up and learn from our community's designers and developers. We've seen time and time again, the best civic projects come from teams with a diverse background.
Remember, there's much more to making a great app than just coding.
The Inaugural UAB Blazer Hatchery and Hackathon Pitch Gala
18 Nov - 05:30 PM
Birmingham, United States
Welcome to a UAB celebration of the power of entrepreneurship to inspire the next generation and to transform communities and industries with impact and ingenuity.
Sponsored by the Alabama Power Foundation, the inaugural Blazer Hatchery and Hackathon attracted 90 applications from UAB students across the university. We selected 25 applicants representing a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. They all share a very strong passion for entrepreneurship and are each pursuing their own entrepreneurial goals.
First, the 25-member cohort completed a three-week intensive seminar in the entrepreneurial mindset. Second, Alabama Power executive leadership presented a grand challenge to the cohort. Third, the cohort elected five leaders and formed five diverse teams. Fourth, the teams engaged independently in a one-month hackathon in which they researched and developed bold entrepreneurial solutions to the grand challenge.
Now, the teams will compete with each other. They will present their entrepreneurial solutions in five-minute pitches, and an experienced panel of judges will select three winning teams. The winners receive $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 at the pitch gala event. The Blazer Hatchery and Hackathon program cultivates entrepreneurial talent via exposure to real-world problems and opportunities.
The pitch gala event welcomes all members of Birmingham's entrepreneurial ecosystem. It will showcase UAB student talent and offer a unique glimpse into our next entrepreneurial generation. There will be ample opportunity for networking with entrepreneurs and leaders, food and refreshments, and entertainment.
