The challenges our community are facing everyday are evolving — and the solutions will require creativity and innovation Finding elegant solutions takes inspiration, it takes ideas, and it takes a team. The 2018 Hackathon will engage 50 Middle School students to work together and address an identified community problem using design thinking to building transformative solutions
The teams will develop innovative business plans, websites, strategies, apps, and/or device prototypes to resolve the presented community/social issue. The keywords for the experience are innovation, creativity and breakthrough. Solutions are not limited to technology. Students will be introduced to social impact solution methods.
Teams will brainstorm, strategize, and create a solution to a real problem faced by the Mobile community. The solution will include several components (technology, banking, medical, safety, entertainment, civic, etc.). Creativity, collaboration, and innovation will help students generate effective and adaptable solutions that will reshape our community.
2018 Hackathon FAQ
WHAT IS A HACKATHON?
A hackathon is an event for students at all levels; encouraging learning new technology, collaborating with other students, and creating something mind-blowing.
WHO WILL ASSIST THE TEAM?
A mentor on your team will be there from the start to finish to guide you and answer your questions both technical and task-related.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Students currently enrolled in a Mobile County Middle School (public and private).
IS CODING OR COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED?
No. There will be a mix of students on all levels of technology. Thinkers and students with a community conscience are the most desired. We are looking for solution agents.
WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE AN IDEA OR TEAM?
No worries! We will have activities at the beginning of the event to help you brainstorm ideas. Each student registers individually. Organizers will be form teams of 5 during the event.
HOW CAN I REGISTER?
Registration begins March 19 and ends April 30. Reserve your spot by registering now, spots fill up fast! There are only 50 spots available. Eventbrite.com is the reservation agent.
HOW MUCH IS IT?
The event is FREE and includes food, drinks, and some swag for the entire hackathon!
WILL THERE BE TRANSPORTATION?
No. Participants are required to arrange their own transportation. Please note that there will be no re-entry for Hack-a-thon participants.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
All attendees are required to bring their valid student ID for admission (name must match registration) and your original Eventbrite ticket. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet for research; there will be equipment available for use.
ARE THERE ANY RULES?
Please no firearms, knives, or weapons of any kind. Also, we expect all hackers to follow our Code of Conduct.
WHAT FOOD WILL YOU PROVIDE?
Continental Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.
