Ada Lovelace Day 2018 - Contemporary Women in STEM Wikipedia edit-a-thon and Wikidata hackathon

Have you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? Did you know that approximately only 17.75% of the biographies on Wikipedia relate to notable women?

Come join the international celebration day of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths for Ada Lovelace Day 2018.

A regular activity for Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) at the University of Edinburgh is the Wikipedia editing event or editathon. This year the focus is contemporary women in STEM who do not currently have Wikipedia pages. Discover the thrill of creatiing new, and editing published, content in the name of Women in STEM!

Contemporary Women in STEM Wikipedia edit-a-thon
    • 2.30pm-3:30pm: Wikipedia editing training from Lorna Campbell, University of Edinburgh's Open Education Service.
    • 3:30-5:30pm: Publishing quality Wikipedia articles related to Women in STEM!

There will be a synchronous Wikidata hackathon event also taking place.

    Wikidata hackathon: Women in STEM

    • 3.30pm-4pm: Wikidata training from Ewan McAndrew, Wikimedian in Residence at the University of Edinburgh.
    • 4-5pm: Hackathon - adding verifiable data about notable Women in STEM!
    • 5pm-5:30pm: Visualising the newly added data.
    • Data on Women in STEM can be provided in an editable table – participants fill in blank columns with missing verifiable information.
      • E.g. Place of study, field of work, notable achievements…

At the end of the Wikipedia and Wikidata workshops we will tweet out the newly created pages and new data visualisations (maps, timelines etc.)

Bring your lunch, drop by for the training or stay the afternoon to pubish an entry!

Nominate your contemporary STEM heroine for consideration at the Wikipedia editathon Tuesday 9th October. This should only take 5-10 minutes and it will really help us to create new role models for young and old alike on the world’s go-to source for information, Wikipedia.

Come along to learn about how Wikipedia works and contribute a greater understanding of Women in STEM!
