AppHack — A Mobile Hackathon

AppHack — A Mobile Hackathon

AppHack is a hackathon organised by Appvation, an app development agency in Adelaide. Solve a Social, Fitness or Security problem in the form of a mobile app, and have the chance to win a top prize of $1000. Anyone can participate, and we encourage entrants to work in teams.

FAQ

What do I need to know?

The whole point of AppHack is for participants to build an iOS, Android or web application. As such, you should have some experience in one of these three areas. In addition, you should know a little about git, since we'll be using that for submissions. UX design and API development are also useful, but it depends on what you're planning on building. Remember that you can sign up as a team, so don't feel like you need to do it all on your own!

How big can my team be?

Teams can be anywhere from 1 to 4 members. All members must buy their own ticket for the event.

I don't have a team, but I want one.

If you don't have a team, don't worry! Please sign up normally, then come to the event at 3pm on the first day. There will be an opportunity for you to talk with other participants, and you'll have time to form groups if you want to. You can also find teams on our Facebook page.

How long does the hackathon go for?

The hackathon runs for a total of 48 hours. You're under no obligation to work on campus, so feel free to come only for the start and return at the end of the event (in time for judging). However, we do recommend that all team members be present on Sunday the 25th from 12pm. In either event, the venue will close each day and reopen the next morning.

When is the deadline for submission?

You will need to have your project submitted by Sunday the 25th of September at 4pm. The winners will then be announced at 5pm.

What should I build?

Anything you want, as long as it fits within the general categories of Social, Fitness and Security. If you're not sure if you're idea fits, send us an email at apphack@appvation.com, or ask one of our team members on the day.

Can I get a head start on my hack?

To ensure a level playing field for all participants, all code and assets must be created during the hackathon. Failure to comply with this rule may result in the offending team's disqualification. You are, however, free to make plans, do research and brainstorm prior to the event.

Can I use external APIs, services and SDKs?

You are encouraged to use any 3rd party services, APIs, open source projects, libraries, and frameworks you want, as long as they are publicly available on the web and credited in your work.

Who owns the intellectual property generated during the hackathon?

You do! However, you must provide your source code to our judges.

What are the demos like?

You'll have 5 minutes to present to a panel of judges and the other participants. After that, there will be time for questions.

How can I reach out to the organizers?

Send us an email at apphack@appvation.com, we'll get back to you.

What do should I bring?

You don't need anything other than your own laptop and your student card.
