Have an app idea to improve government services? Interested in creating innovative applications that will harness the “Internet of Things” enabling the Federal Government to better serve their employees and the citizen?

Come to this special Internet of Things (IoT) focused AT&T Mobile Application Hackathon - Government Solutions to become part of this exciting event.

With the adoption of mobile broadband, the Federal Government and their industry partners are searching for new creative applications in the areas of: fleet management, supply chain management, and public safety. We are looking to connect people to information enabling the Government to better serve the citizen. Imagine this! You develop a new public safety application that improves law enforcement and citizen interactions with the potential of saving lives.

How can you help? Work with AT&T and other high technology companies to show case your creative thinking and application development talent. Develop your idea on commercially available software and leverage sensor technologies from leading commercial companies.

The Federal Government is an important market with many opportunities for developers. By hacking new mobile applications, developers can mature their ideas, get involved in an exciting community, and create something to further the greater social good.

You Bring: Your laptop, skills & ideas. Come with a collaborative, team focused mindset and/or team up in advance on Twitter/Facebook/Google+ via the #atthack hashtag. Whether you are a backend person, designer, entrepreneur, student, or just interested in tech; you are invited to attend this event. Every group needs a good balance of talent and your development skills are needed!

We Supply: Quick presentations and code samples that help to bootstrap your hacking, food to keep you going, and caffeine to keep you awake. We will have technical senseis to assist you in building faster, smarter, and with new tools. And no IoT event would be complete without Loaner Hardware:

 

Event Schedule.  The following is a list of the weekend's agenda:

  • Day 1
    • 6PM - Kickoff event with dinner, networking, and developer dating which leads into idea pitches and team formation.
    • 7PM - Speakers present (please see below for list)
    • 8PM - Pitch ideas and form teams
  • Day 2
    • 10AM - The fun continues with breakfast served in the morning! Work with the teams from Day 1 to complete the app spec’d. Senseis will be available throughout the entire day to help you code up your solution. App submissions will be accepted throughout the day with a deadline of 6PM.
    • 1PM - Lunch is Served
    • 6PM - Pencils down. Please sign up your teams to present via this link: http://bit.ly/hackprezreg Pitches start promptly at 6PM and are limited to three (3) minutes per team. No powerpoints unless you are only presenting an idea.

 

Prizes. The following prizes are experiential and geared towards accelerating you towards a successful business as well as expanding your network and industry knowledge:

  • Best Government Solutions App Overall
    • 1st Place - $10,000 cash to split between team members or donated to charity
  • Best Public Safety App
    • 1st Place - $2,500 cash to split between team members or donated to charity
  • Best Fleet Management App
    • 1st Place - $2,500 cash to split between team members or donated to charity
  • Best Supply Chain Management App
    • 1st Place - $2,500 cash to split between team members or donated to charity
  • Best Use of AT&T M2X
    • 1st Place - $1,000 cash to split between team members or donated to charity
  • Best Use of IBM Bluemix
    • 1st Place - $1,000 cash to split between team members or donated to charity
  • Best Use of mBed hardware
    • 1st Place - $500 cash to split between team members or donated to charity
 

Judging Criteria. Apps will be judged based on the criteria below and weighted accordingly.  

  • 33% Weight - Ability to clearly articulate what your app does
  • 33% Weight - Originality of idea
  • 33% Weight - Use of Node.JS, Sencha, cloud9ide.com, Heroku, and other technologies

Maria Roat Juan Pablo Risso
Maria Roat, is the Chief Technology Officer of the Department of Transportation and is responsible for architecting of the Department’s technical transformation focused on cloud computing, data management, and leveraging enterprise technology services to improve the operations, productivity, efficiency, effectiveness and service delivery of the Department. - See more... Juan Pablo Risso, is a Partner Solution Engineer at SmartThings/Samsung. He is a geek, technology Innovator, Software Engineer and Maker. He works daily in a wide variety of IOT solutions. His passion is creating insanely great software. He spearheaded the development of some really awesome software products, including integrations with BMW, Phillips Hue, Sonos, etc.
Ben Nelson Joe Bossalini
Ben Nelson, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at AT&T, is based out of sunny Seattle! His passion is educating developers young and old about mobile application development best practices through events like hackathons that fuse the collective interests of multiple technologies and business leaders. Joe Bossalini, is a product development engineer working for AT&T. His team is currently involved with designing and building AT&T M2X, a cloud-based fully managed data storage service for network connected machine-to-machine (M2M) devices. He has experience in a wide range of application enablement activities, including product design, software development, hardware configuration and maintenance, and customer experience.
Edward Bridge II Sam Grove
Edward A. Bridge II, an Advisory IT Specialist, IBM PureSytems & Cloud, assists with enabling the IBM Bluemix Platform. Edward develops and delivers workshops and demonstrations for PureApplication System, SoftLayer, and Bluemix to IBM Global Entrepreneur Program participants and IBM Business Partners worldwide. He attended Western Illinois University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign graduating with highest honors with undergraduate and graduate business degrees with concentrations in IT, computer science, strategy, and management. Sam Grove is a Senior Applications Engineer at ARM® part of the IoT business unit, supporting and evangelizing the ARM® mbed™ ecosystem. He has extensive experience in a variety of engineering disciplines including embedded systems, hardware and software design. He has designed systems for public safety communication, vehicle communication, vehicle diagnostics and georeferenced imaging. Sam spent 6 years designing automotive infotainment systems, during which time he received an Innovations award at the 2011 CES for in-vehicle audio/video. His designs have led to several multi-million dollar international business deals for small and startup businesses. Sam obtained his BS degree in Electronics Engineering from California State University, Long Beach.
