Battlebots Hackathon #2 hosted by WillowTree, Inc.

#2

Coming off a uber successful Battlebots Hackathon June 25th, there was a desire to do another one at the end of July. So here we go.

BTW, Best way to get started and keep up in the meantime:

https://github.com/willowtreeapps/battlebots

See you end of July.

What is Battlebots?

Battlebots is code based game, where humans just like you, write code to move a bot around a virtual arena. When your bot enters the arena you and your bot will face challenges such as;

- safely navigating the arena
- avoiding threats like walls, bot poison, and even other bots themselves
- collecting items that will increase your bot's score
- applying the perfect algorithm to your bot, enabling it to destroy anything and everything around it

The game is over when there is one bot left standing or time has run out. The bot with the highest score wins.

What is the goal of the hackathon?

Sunday, July 24th from 9am to 6pm at the WillowTree Treehouse in Charlottesville.

What is the goal of the hackathon?

The goal of the Battlebots hackathon is to have fun, learn something new, and contribute to a project that encourages both of these concepts. The game engine / API and front end client are written in Clojure / ClojureScript. However we are exploring enabling bot scripting in any language so you can have fun writing bots and learning new languages.

What can I do?

Right now Battlebots is in its early stages, so early that it's name may not even be Battlebots by the time of the Hackathon. We have a working prototype but we could use your help making it better.

UX / Design: As you can see from the video, we could use a lot of help in this area. From the game / score board to the admin CMS, we need to make improvements in both the UX and overall design of the app.

Dev Ops: Were looking to improve the infrastructure that hosts Battlebots and add the ability to support multiple languages.

API Development: Add support for features like (Getting aggregated player stats, and user profile information)

Client Development: Making improvements to the UI, game visualization, and adding features.

Bot Architects: We need people to write bots, test out the app, and provide feedback.

Game Architect: The rules are game engine are not set in stone. We're looking to establish a set of rules and features we want to support. Your ideas and creativity will drive the Battlebot experience.

What else should I know?

- WillowTree will be providing food & beverages throughout the hackathon
- You don't need to know Clojure to get involved
