Blockchain Canada presents Ethereum in Action

Blockchain, "the technology that makes Bitcoin work", is poised to change our lives and the way we use the web. Ethereum is the fuel to make it happen.

This summer, Blockchain Canada is putting on a series of events and educational workshops at Bitmaker in downtown Toronto, culminating in a hackathon that will kickstart the next generation of the world's blockchain applications.

Join us this summer to learn, create and build new blockchain applications on Ethereum that will shape the future!

PANEL: June 28th @ 6:30 pm: The Blockchain Economy: How Canada can lead blockchain innovation and a discussion on The DAO

In this initial session join our guests Jeff Coleman, Alan Wunsche, Toufi Saliba, and Ethan Wilding for engaging presentations and discussions about how we can make Canada a leader in the new field of blockchain technology. We will dive into the incredible rise of The DAO, how it evolved and what the recent turmoil means for the Ethereum community. Come with questions!

WEEKEND WORKSHOP: July 9th & 10th

  • Business and social use-cases for blockchain technology
  • How to buy cryptocurrencies (like bitcoin and ether)
  • How to send and receive cryptocurrencies
  • Learn how to store bitcoin and ether securely
  • Understand decentralization and its implications

WEEKEND WORKSHOP: July 16th & 17th

BLOCKCHAIN IMMERSION PART 2: Ethereum Coding Bootcamp

In this interactive course you will learn how to build smart contracts and decentralized applications on Ethereum. Over 2 days we will take you from zero to coding and deploying smart contracts on the Ethereum network. This course is preparation to help you excel in the following week’s hackathon.

  • This is a technical workshop and you will need a computer and at a minimum, a beginner level knowledge and familiarity with HTML, CSS & JavaScript. Worskhop is Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-5pm with lunch.
  • We do not presume that attendees will have any significant programming experience beforehand. Over the two days we will progress from the fundamental basics of settings up a programming environment to building and deploying smart contracts / decentralized applications.

Some of the topics include:

  • Basics of coding in Solidity, Ethereum's main smart contract language
  • Hands-on, step by step smart contract creation sessions
  • Learn how to use JavaScript to create interactive and useful smart contract front-ends
  • Learn best design practises and techniques for building decentralized applications

For reading material, if time permits beforehand we recommend reading through the Solidity and Homestead:

HACKATHON: July 22-24th

ETHEREUM SUMMER HACKATHON: Beyond Fintech

Canada is positioned to be a leader in Blockchain technology.

Come build the next application of the future with a team of enthusiastic coders, designers, and blockchainers at our hackathon in downtown Toronto.

The focus is on extending blockchains beyond fintech appplications. Some examples include: voting systems, governance, decentralized social media, public services, content delivery, registries, proof of accomplishments, and much more.

OMERS Ventures will lead judging of the live demos and we'll be adding prize information for participants in the days to come - stay tuned!
