Brain Reprogramming Hackathon at Sustainable Minerals Institute UQ

Organized by Cliff Saunders

Greetings everyone and a Happy New Year!

The Centre for Applied Neuroscience in Business www.brainreprogramming.com has joined forces with the Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland www.smi.uq.edu.au to hold a Hackathon on Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February on the UQ campus in Brisbane.

What are we going to hack?

We are challenging the SMI students and faculty, leading programmer groups and Mining Industry participants to jointly develop and build the world’s first ‘end2end’ multiplayer 3D Virtual Mining Rehearsal Environment video game.

Why?

Many in the Industry believe that it is high time for Mining to integrate all the moving parts of the business into an articulated, interactive and flexible whole to help shift Mining from being the most laggardly adopter of technology and new ideas in the world, to moving into at least the top quartile.

It is also high time for all of the multiple research disciplines that are a part of and inform the Mining Industry to have a research and design tool that they can all use simultaneously with each other and across silos to improve mutual understanding of today’s problems and find workable solutions in this messy multistakeholder world.

So, we want to create a 3D Multiplayer Learning/Rehearsal Environment video game to be able to do such things as:

1) Create a vision for a people centered Natural Resources Industry
2) De-risk the implementation of new ideas and technology into the Mining workplace
3) Re-conceptualize mine efficiency
4) Experiment with different ways of thinking about the mineral orebody, environment and its sustainable development
5) Massively improve cross-silo coordination and cooperation across Mining organizations

These are just some of the applications that we want to build into our multiplayer 3D Virtual Mine Rehearsal Environment.

Who will be there?

We are expecting 80-100 participants from the student body and faculty of SMI, Mining Industry Executives, NGO and Government reps, 3D Unity, UNREAL and other game designers and programmers.

Our Hackathon already has strong commitment, support and interest from BHP, Newcrest, AngloAmerican, Wenco Mining Systems, Dassault Systèmes, AMIRA International, Hatch, Colorado School of Mines, Hycroft Nevada, and we are expecting many more to confirm their attendance.

When?

Start time:        Friday 3rd:  3:00 pm - Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th:  8:00 am

End time:         5:00-7:00 pmish each day

The event will be fully catered and provisioned.
