Annual Climathon 24-hour hackathon – 24th-25th October 2020
Climathon is a global movement that takes place in October every year and is an opportunity to engage citizens on climate action!
You can make a difference!
We are collaborating with several Welsh authorities to encourage climate-conscious individuals from all backgrounds to consider the future climate change and the effect it has on Welsh infrastructure.
The Challenge:
Unleash the power of Welsh Infrastructure!
We are looking for new ways to use technology to bring data and research collaboration to climate-proof sector plans.
The Target:
Transport infrastructure is directly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. To the extent that structures cannot be divorced from the environment within which they are built, environmental changes—such as a rise in sea level, more frequent and intense storms and storm surges, increased wave heights, floods, droughts, and temperature changes—all have consequences for the design, construction, and location of transport infrastructure. Inadequate attention to these impacts can increase the long-term costs of transport investments and increase the likelihood that such investments will fail to deliver the benefits for which they were intended.
Cardiff Climathon is your opportunity to concentrate your time and talents to create a lasting positive change in Welsh climate-proofing investments in the transport.

FAQs
What is Climathon?
Originally conceptualised as a 24-hour hackathon by Climate-KIC, Climathon has since taken off as a global movement, engaging citizens on climate action—and providing cities with continued support on the unique challenges they face.
- Setting the climate challenge – Cities identify their climate challenges and call on their citizens to come up with innovative solutions.
- Coming up with solutions – Citizens, city officials, and partners connect under a shared vision for a healthier city, which is manifested in a 24-hour hackathon to find innovative city solutions.
- Beyond the hackathon – Innovation happens when diverse perspectives are brought together—creating both tangible climate solutions for cities and empowered communities. Climathon is more than a hackathon, it’s a movement.
What is Adaptation to Climate Change?
Adaptation options in the sector can generally be divided into engineering (structural) options
(subsurface conditions, material specifications, cross-section and standard dimensions, drainage and erosion, and protective engineering structures), and non-engineering options (maintenance planning and early warning, alignment, master planning and land use planning, and environmental management). In addition, it is important to recognize that in a number of circumstances, a “do nothing” response to climate change—for example, allowing an infrastructure to deteriorate and be decommissioned instead of climate proofing the infrastructure—may be a preferred course of action.
What is the Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Wales?
Welsh Ministers are required by law to report from time to time on the objectives, actions and future priorities in relation to climate change and its impact. This Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Wales meets those requirements by setting out 32 adaptation actions for Wales. Welsh Government now seeks public opinion on the plan.
