DATA Challenge: 16-20 May - Solve a data challenge for charity, win great prizes and do your contribution for a better world!

Following the successful Data Visualisation Learning session for Charities and Social Enterprises (http://vizwiz.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/the-importance-of-data-visualisation-in.html) on April 14, we would like to invite you to a unique event where you can use data to solve challenges identified by the charities. Great chance to get mentored by senior leaders in Google, Barclays, University of Cambridge etc

We are launching a Virtual Data Hackathon from Monday 16 May and culminating on Friday 20 May in partnership with Newcastle University and Making A Difference Through Analytics and the Digital Catapult Centre North East & Tees Valley, a non-profit organisation working with the government to accelerate digital innovation in the UK.

How will the Hackathon work?

You will be set four challenges (data will be provided), to choose from, each related to a charity:
• Multiple Sclerosis Society – Understanding Operational Effectiveness, using post code level data https://www.mssociety.org.uk/what-is-ms
• Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation – Improving Fundraising Effectiveness, using donor data https://www.roycastle.org/
• Impetus-PEF – Getting a 360 degree view of customer base and able to predict using historic data http://www.impetus-pef.org.uk/
• World Migration Data by United Nations – Understanding impact on countries and their GDP by analysing patterns on migration

You can take as many challenges you like and will be provided with data sets and challenge details on Monday 16 May at 2pm BST.

Some of the prizes that you can win:

a) Win hundreds of £s of Amazon Vouchers – all 4 challenges have their unique prizes
b) Chance to get mentored by a senior leader in Google
c) Lunch with Elisabetta Osta (Fellow at Cambridge) at University of Cambridge + a tour (only for UK winners)
d) Spend a day at the Barclays Innovation Eco System in London or Manchester (only for UK winners)
e) Get mentored by Nik Adhia, VP Innovation, Barclays
f) Chance to present to the board/senior members from the Charities involved

Support during the Hackathon

Each day there will be an optional hour of mentoring with charity leaders and industry experts to support you in building your solutions and you’ll have an option to work from sites at Barclays (Canary Wharf) and Digital Catapult NETV in Sunderland from 9am on Friday 20 May.

Naomi Morrow (Digital Catapault NETV), Steve Caughey (Newcastle University, Cloud Innovation Centre) and I will be available for any questions around logistics

Final Presentations

Presentations will take place at 4:30pm Friday 20 May to the panel of Judges:

Presentations will be followed by networking drinks from 5:30pm
