The Tishman Environment and Design Center (TEDC) is teaming up with New School Buildings Sustainable Initiatives to host the #ClimateCitizen Hackathon on March 4, 2016.

Sustainability is a core value at The New School. Driven by its mission to confront real-world problems through bold and creative solutions, The New School is tackling the global climate crisis head on.

The New School’s Climate Action Plan will guide the efforts of the university to reduce the university’s greenhouse gas emissions and become the model for designing scalable and transferable solutions to create a better, more resilient and more equitable future. The Climate Action Plan will address operations, academics, and campus culture to establish a comprehensive strategy to act on climate.

This is your chance to contribute to the plan.

Bring your creativity, problem solving skills, and academic expertise to help us advance ideas and solutions that will lead to increased awareness and participation in campus-wide climate action!

#ClimateCitizen Hackathon Challenges

Data Interpretation and Visualization

Calling all designers and data lovers!

Dig into The New School’s real energy use and emissions data. Help us create posters, infographics, mobile apps, web pages and more to show how much energy The New School uses, what that means for the university’s emissions, and the impacts of possible efficiency projects or energy saving initiatives on campus. Use your data visualization skills to inspire climate action!

TNS Carbon “Internet of Things”

Calling all systems thinkers!

The Internet of Things extends internet connectivity beyond traditional devices like desktop and laptop computers, smartphones and tablets to a diverse range of devices and everyday things that utilize embedded technology to communicate and interact with the external environment, all via the Internet. Help us map out how physical objects, devices and buildings at The New School are technologically connected to each other and the human community. Help us envision how these connections can be increased or improved to better engage the New School community in achieving our energy efficiency and emissions reduction goals.

Climate Action Campaign

Calling all activists and organizers!

Climate action at The New School is a campus-wide team effort. Use your leadership, management, and planning skills to design new tools, strategies, or campaigns to engage New School students, faculty, and staff and empower the university community to have an impact on energy use and emissions.

Energy to Art

Calling all actors, dancers, musicians, visual artists and other creative folks!

Use your knack for artistic expression to tell the story of the New School’s climate and environment initiatives and call the New School community to climate action. Compose a song, choreograph a dance, perform a spoken word poem, paint a picture, or surprise us with your artistic interpretation.
