DataMission - UN World Food Programme Hackathon
Mark your calendars! DataMission and the World Food Programme (WFP) from the United Nations (UN) join forces and welcome all Data Missionaries on Saturday May 14 for the hackathon. This is your chance to help the WFP in the fight against hunger by using your skills and expertise for a good cause.
We are looking for you
Are you a data scientist or developer? And do you want to use your skills to find new insights and grapple with social issues? Or do you work at an organisation doing good in the world? And preferably have some expertise on hunger issues? Or do you have knowledge on market prices and the economic system? Know how to work with survey data? A business analyst? Or are you a student specializing in one of these topics? We would love to welcome you at the Hackathon.
Partnering with WFP’s mVAM towards #ZeroHunger
The World Food Programme is the UN’s humanitarian agency dedicated to achieving a world of Zero Hunger. WFP works in some of the most challenging places in the world where traditional face-to-face data collection is extremely expensive, time-consuming and in some cases, nearly impossible. WFP’s mobile Vulnerability, Analysis, and Mapping (mVAM) team uses mobile technologies such as short phone surveys, SMS, live telephone interviews and an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to collect critical food security information. mVAM needs your help with data-analysis, improving their survey methods and data visualizations.
Challenges
-
Analysis - how can we use innovative data science, statistical models or machine learning techniques to develop more detailed, higher quality estimates on food security?
-
Data-driven product - can we build a software, webpage or mobile application to encourage more survey participation?
-
Data visualization - how can we present complex data analysis in a clear, simple way to enable decision making?
