DESIGN SWARMS WORKSHOP WITH SURYA VANKA
Design Swarms with Surya Vanka
Learn and apply design thinking in just a day to brighten up the lives of seriously ill children. Partnering with Deutsche Bank Innovation Labs, we’re delighted to invite Surya Vanka to Berlin for a full-day workshop on the Design Swarms process, tools, techniques and framework that has become popular around the world. It is a method used by companies like Amazon, Autodesk, Microsoft, REI and T-Mobile to build products that are relevant and transform their business.
You will be given a real-world design problem faced by children who are living with serious or life-limiting illnesses and asked to come up with a disruptive solution. The challenge will be shared at the start of the workshop, and you will be asked to solve it as part of a team. We’ll provide everything you need as you are led through a fast-paced Design Swarms process envisioning and creating solutions that embrace social, physical and digital opportunities.
The workshop is being prepared in partnership with one of Deutsche Bank’s UK Charities of the Year 2018/2019, Rays of Sunshine, a UK based children’s charity that exists to transform the lives of seriously ill children and their families. The charity does this by granting their greatest wishes and providing support to the hospitals and hospices that care for them. Their work brings joy and hope, improves self-esteem and provides an opportunity to create precious memories. Their aim is to welcome every one of the 49,000 children in the UK living with a serious or life-limiting illness in to the Rays of Sunshine family, providing them with ongoing support and access to their resources when they need it.
Your solutions will form the basis for a Hackathon that Rays of Sunshine will run in cooperation with Deutsche Bank later this year. The ultimate aim is to create a tangible solution for the children and families whose lives you will transform and to raise awareness and funds for the charity, to enable them to continue their work.
Make a Difference. Build your Network. Reinvent yourself.

ABOUT RAYS OF SUNSHINE
Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity exists to transform the lives of seriously ill children and their families. We do this by granting their greatest wishes and providing support to the hospitals and hospices that care for them. Every day of the year we give brave young people, often going through painful and grueling treatment, the chance to put their illness on hold and experience moments of pure joy and magic.
Over 6,500 individual wishes have been granted since the charity was set up in 2003. Wishes can be as unique as the children themselves and whether a child wants to be a princess or a fireman for the day, go to Disneyland in Paris, visit Santa in Lapland, own an iPad, meet a favourite celebrity or even a ‘real life’ mermaid, Rays of Sunshine works hard to make that wish come true. Once a child has a wish granted with Rays of Sunshine, they become a part of the Rays of Sunshine family.
Rays of Sunshine also grants Hospital Ward Wishes and organises Hospital Activity Days which offer a distraction to hundreds of children during their time in hospital or a hospice. Events and outings are also held throughout the year for large groups of seriously ill children.
