DIGITAL CAMP FOR TEENS -- CONNECTING FOR GOOD

Join the party and get creative with tech!  Learn how technology can be used to help our planet and build a project. Connect with friends and learn from professionals to build skills and a personal profile to prepare you for jobs of the future. No programming experience required.

This 2-day camp offers daily hands-on workshops to introduce you to the technologies & tools that are shaping the world we live in.  Bring a friend or family member to kickstart your journeys into the digital world.

• 23-24 Nov -- 2 Day Digital Camp for Girls:  Join for 2 days of personal and digital skills development. Workshops, talks, mentoring, and teamwork with our Connect for Good programme.
• 23 Nov -- 1 Day Digital Camp for Girls. This day's talks & mentoring sessions are tailored for girls, but all are welcome! 
• 24 Nov -- Digital Camp for Teens (Boys & Girls). Workshops + Connect for Good Project 
  

Proceeds from all tickets support the development of a sustainable education programme for teens and the Vodafone Foundation charity Girl Fund (UK registered charity no. 1089625).

ABOUT THE DIGITAL CAMP

• Get Hands On with the Hottest Tech. A simple introduction to the hottest technologies in a day. Get hands on with tech, smart devices, and data to start building your skills  -- from augmented and virtual reality, to mobile apps, games, robotics, artificial intelligence and 5G. We break it all down into simple concepts & help you to get started.
• Design Your Future. Who do you want to become? Identify what's unique to you and paint your vision.  Learn about what lies ahead and new jobs in the digital world. Hear from professionals in both technical and creative roles about what skills are required. Get valuable advice that will serve your future.
• Share Your Story.  Learn the essentials of storytelling. Create a story and a video blog about cool things you are doing with digital to share with friends and  family.
• Build a Project with Mentoring.  Build a project to show off your digital skills and creativity. Get coaching and mentoring online in the weeks that follow the camp to support your development.
• Prepare for Work Experience. We’ll  help you get started building your personal story and experience profile.  Learn how to present your best self and find work experience.

The Digital Camp offers introductory workshops each day taught by professionals and enthusiasts to help get you started.  On the 2nd day, you will develop your personal story and put your creativity and skills to work in a "Connect for Good" Ideas Hackathon.  Mentoring will be available for those who register for 3 weeks following camp.

DAY 1 - SATURDAY, 23 NOVEMBER

Example workshops include:

• The World is Your Canvas:  Mixed Reality with Microsoft Hololens.  Get your hands on Microsoft HoloLens, the first self-contained, holographic computer, enabling you to engage with your digital content and interact with holograms in the world around you.
• Build a Pocket Satellite & Take a Space Selfie:  Learn how satellites are helping us to capture data and connect it to explore changes in the planet and in space.  Build a nano satellite and then take a selfie with it! Learn how digitized data can be transmitted with 5G.
• Connect with Smart Devices:  Learn how to connect devices to communicate over different types of networks. Understand what makes them “smart”, the logic behind intelligence, and how to set and receive alerts to track what you care about most with V-Camera, V-Bag, V-Pet.
• Dance with Pepper: Talk to Pepper the robot and teach her some dance moves with simple coding. Pepper is a humanoid companion created to communicate with humans through voice, touch, and the expression of emotions.
• Get Started with Cloud & AI: What is cloud computing and why is this important? This introductory workshop will show you how to unlock the power of data, build intelligence and predict the future. Learn from the team at Microsoft how to build artificial intelligence.
• Future Jobs Finder:  Identify your strengths and skills that will serve you in the digital world. This workshop takes you through on online assessment and personal report and matches you to future jobs and potential work experiences.
• Find Your Girl Power:  Identify what’s unique to you & who you want to become. Start building your vision, create goals and outline steps to get there with coaching.
• Prepare your CV and Digital Profile with LinkedIn: Your curriculum vitae and digital profile on LinkedIn is the way you will introduce yourself to the professional world. Learn tips and tricks of what makes you stand out and how to prepare.

DAY 2 - SUNDAY, 24 NOVEMBER

The second day of Digital Camp builds on ideas & activities from the introductory workshops. Students will immerse themselves in projects and work in teams to solve problems, create and present ideas to "Connect for Good" using the Design Thinking methodology and Agile working practices. They will also start to develop their personal stories and profiles to present their projects.Example workshops and projects include:

• Build a Drone, Photography & 5G.  Build a drone to take home. Learn how professionals are working with drones to take new types of photos. Understand how 5G networks are bringing new possibilities to life. Kick off a project and build stories to share with friends and family. (Special kit is required for those who wish to build their own drone to take home. Add this workshop ticket to your order by 18th Oct.)
• Connect for Good - Ideas Hackathon & Project:  Design a connected product or service to help our planet and educate communities. Using a Design Thinking approach, you will work in teams to understand user needs, build a product proposition and then plan its launch.  Teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. Prizes will be awarded for the best ideas. Kick off a project with mentors and build stories to share with friends and family.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Interested to see digital work in action and work alongside professionals? Apply for a 1-week work experience at Vodafone. This camp will help you prepare. Details will follow for those who register interest.

WHAT TO BRING

You will need to bring a PC or Mac and ideally a smart phone with video camera plus charging cables. You will receive email instructions for any further software downloads required for workshops.

The "Build A Drone" workshop requires purchasing an additional ticket due to special equipment. Orders must be received by 15th Nov.

Other equipment (e.g. AR headsets, smart devices) will be provided as part of the workshops. Under 18’s require a consent form by a parent / guardian. 

OUR MISSION

We aim to inspire a love of learning with young people about technology and support their journeys to first work experiences. We believe it is critical to create an engaging and inclusive environment for girls, which are under-represented in both STEM and in leadership roles.

We're on a mission to build a sustainable education programme offering skills development and work opportunities for boys and girls of any age through a co-funded model with socially responsible businesses, educational organisations, and government.

This digital camp is a pilot that we hope will enable us to launch an ongoing programme. We greatly value your support and feedback.
