Elasticsearch Intern Workshop: Round II

Hey Interns!

Looking for another awesome technology to use in your hackathon projects? Interested in some hands-on, guided learning with real software engineers? Want some free food??

If so, you’re in luck. The Workday Search team is hosting an Elasticsearch workshop for interns!

NOTE: This will be the same content as our previous workshop. We are repeating the workshop to accommodate the many interns who were interested but unable to attend the first one.

What is Elasticsearch?

Elasticsearch is a powerful open-source search engine that is widely used in the tech industry. It has gained momentum quickly due to its easy-to-use REST API, distributed nature, and full-text search capabilities.

The world around us is full of data - whether you’re interested in a career in startups, large-scale tech, or just enjoy learning new things, Elasticsearch is a great technology to be familiar with. ES is utilized by companies such as Facebook, Soundcloud, Github, and many more to bring intelligent search to their products.

During this workshop, we’ll teach you the basics of ES and introduce you to some tools that make working with it super easy. You’ll also get a chance to meet fellow interns from other companies, as well as learn about how we use Elasticsearch at Workday!

What you’ll learn:

  1. Search engine basics

  2. How to use Elasticsearch

  3. Working with HTTP / REST APIs

  4. Tools for ES development

Schedule:

  • 5:30 - 6:00: Arrive, grab food, hang out

  • 6:00 - 6:15: Intros, What is Elasticsearch?

  • 6:15 - 6:45: Basic ES Commands

  • 6:45 - 7:45: Building a product with Elasticsearch

  • 7:45 - 8:00: Wrap-up, Q&A

What to bring:

  1. Your own computer (& perhaps charger)

  2. Excitement for learning something new

  3. A hungry stomach :)

Before the workshop:

  1. Be sure to have Git installed (https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-Installing-Git)

  2. Have a lightweight text editor available (we recommend Sublime Text: https://www.sublimetext.com/3, but vim is cool too)

  3. Be semi-comfortable navigating your terminal of choice (ideally POSIX)
