Emberitas - Ember.js Workshop for Women
Emberitas is a free one-day workshop to teach women Ember.js. The two-track workshop includes a course for women who are new to code (and will focus on principles of MVC and object-oriented programming through the lens of Ember.js) as well as an intermediate track for women who are already familiar with a backend or frontend MVC framework and want to learn more about what Ember.js has to offer.
Why are we doing this? The Ember community is uniquely welcoming, supportive, and genuine. As just one example of how Ember stands out among tech communities, 33% of EmberConf 2016 speakers were women.
However, EmberATX’s female meetup attendance is pretty dismal! As a community, we’re actively looking for ways to fix this and we realized we simply need more Ember developers in Austin.
When women find welcoming communities in tech, they stay in the industry longer.
That’s why an event like Emberitas is so important, and why we're excited to see you there on July 16th, 2016.
Visit www.emberitas.com for more updates, information about our sponsors, and more.
Tentative Schedule
We're still figuring out the details, but expect start with breakfast and some introductions. We'll move into a morning session, break for lunch, then continue the workshop in the afternoon.
Once the workshop is over, we're planning a community Happy Hour (sponsored by Avention) that will bring together members of the EmberATX communtity and workshop participants.
FAQs
What do I need to bring?
Your computer, and yourself. Recent model Macs are preferrable, but we should be able to get your Windows computer set up, too. We'll provide everything else, including breakfast and lunch.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?
We'll send out some instructions to help you install the required software before the event, and we'll be onsite the morning of to make sure you're all set up. We may also send you some relevant reading or activities to look at before the workshop, but that won't be required.
What's the Parking Situation?
The Iron Yard is located in the Penn Field Complex on South Congress, and ample free parking is available.
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
No. We're maintaining a waitlist of other interested individuals who would like to attend the workshop. In the event that you cannot attend, we'll open up registration to the next person on the waitlist.
I'm a guy. Can I attend?
Women are given priority for attendance at this event. We encourage interested men to join the waitlist. If there are spots in the workshop that have not been claimed by July 9, we will begin offering seats to men and women on the waitlist in the order in which they signed up. As a community, we're actively looking for ways to be inclusive to those that feel intimidated attending local meet ups and hackathons due to a lack of women. We are striving to create an environment that is conducive to learning and welcoming regardless of your tech expertise.
We encourage men to become Emberitas supporters in the community by lending their knowledge through volunteering and giving lightning talks during an event.
