GeekGirl Meetup & Facebook Hackathon: Be A Lifesaver
GeekGirl & Facebook Hackathon: Be A Lifesaver
We're looking for women and non-binary designers, engineers, content strategists and other tech roles to join us in the Facebook London office at Brock Street to hack for a day in association with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution to help them with their efforts to create digital products to help them save more lives. You'll join people from Facebook, Ladies That UX and fellow GeekGirls to tackle solutions that can really make a difference. We strongly encourage attendees to bring their own suggestions to the hack, but we'll also have some existing ideas if you just want to show up.
ABOUT THE HACK!
Water is part of life. Drowning shouldn’t be.
Let’s empower communities to be safer all round.
The RNLI are committed to a 50% reduction in drowning deaths in UK and RoI by 2024. The RNLI is also committed to making an impact on the global drowning epidemic (currently 360,000 lives are lost each year - WHO 2015 figures), this is more than from maternal mortality or protein-energy malnutrition.
Rescue alone isn’t going to do it. That’s the last resort. We need to invest effort in drowning prevention – improving water safety awareness and understanding through education, skills development and understanding of the scale of the issue (at home and abroad) through influence, supervision, education and working in partnership with others.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM YOU ARE TRYING TO HACK?
How might we empower local communities to reduce drowning while…
- Supporting local economies? (social resilience, incomes, livelihoods )
- Helping people enjoy waterside locations?
- Participating in day-to-day life activities involving water, such as collecting drinking water, caring for children in & around the home or even walking by the canal to the shop?
