GlobalGirl Media Academy 2016

We live in a culturally diverse country that promotes gender equality, and yet females and their views are under-represented - and often misrepresented - in the UK media. So much of our understanding of life, and our place in it, is filtered through the eyes of men. Women are consistently stereotyped and sexualised in the media. Less than 30% of roles in newspapers and television are held by women. At GlobalGirl Media UK, we are committed to turning up the volume of girls voices and changing the message, by developing girls' media literacy and giving them a platform. We promote freedom of expression while building self-esteem, leadership capacity and 21st century skills.

This summer, GlobalGirl Media UK will train its first cohort of girls in digital media and we want you to join us. This is an an amazing opportunity for you to create and share digital journalism designed to ignite community activism and spark social change. The course will cover:

  • Digital journalism

  • Video camera, sound and editing

  • Blogging, print journalism and writing for camera

  • Interview techniques

  • How to source and pitch a story

  • Social media for social change, how to use media to start a campaign

  • Leadership and civic activism

The course also includes field visits to broadcasters such as the BBC,  on-going support from a mentor and advice for furthering your career in journalism, as well as possibilities for international exchange with previous graduates and an online platform for your reports. Take a look at this video to understand what GMM is all about.

By completing the training you will become the UK's first Global Girls reporters. GGM UK reporters have been invited to many exciting events including ThoughtWorks’ first ever all female hackathon, Southbank’s International Day of the Girl, Sundance Film Festival and ThomsonReuters’ Trust Women conference.  Click here to see what other Global Girls are up to at the moment in America.
