What is GOVJAM ’16 MELBOURNE?

GOVJAM ’16 MELBOURNE is the Melbourne Chapter of the Global GovJam movement in 2016. This movement seeks to bring the problem solving power of design thinking and service design to the complex field of government interactions and public services. It is the sister event to the annual Global Service Jam and the Global Sustainability Jam. The Global Service Jam movement is committed to exploring and sharing the value generated by the new field of enquiry known loosely as “design-thinking.”

What is the Global GovJam Movement?

This is a non-profit movement. It invites people around the world to host simultaneous events as part of a two and quarter day global hackathon. Participants, the “jammers,” ideate, make prototypes, test their ideas with users (citizens), and build new and novel products and services in the pursuit of better, human-centred government interactions and public services.

How fast can you build, test and deliver a working prototype of a new and novel product or service?

All up a Jam is 24 hours of concentrated human activity. And, all of this gets done! Jammers work together on their product or service using design-thinking, startup business model tools and other techniques to accelerate their learning and deliver a prototype, pitching it globally via video to explain their invention. They prototype rapidly, test, iterate, re-design and deliver their vision.

The tsunami of creativity is inspired by a globally consistent theme that is shared across the globe following the path of the Sun. Australia and New Zealand kick this event off for the world.

All the Jams are run on a non-profit basis by teams of volunteers. The materials and final products are made available to the world under Creative Commons licensing.

What is a Jam?

A jam is a human-centred design-led hackathon. It uses the musical metaphor of “jamming” together, where a team of individuals who are unrelated come together to make great and new music. GovJam is a service design jam. In a service design jam, the people are the musicians, their experience and imagination the instruments and the music made: novel products and services they could not create alone.

Jams are about empathy, collaboration and experimentation. They promote co-design and participation. Come and stretch your understanding of what you are capable of creating in 24 intensive hours.

What will I learn from this experience?

You will experience the value of design thinking to the business of government. Nothing will prepare you for the speed at which ideas are generated, prototyped, tested, refined, prototyped and put to the reality test: letting citizen users interact with your creation.

You will learn (depending on what your team wishes to use to progress your idea):

Design-thinking methods (divergent/convergent thinking, learning by doing, customer journeys, empathy maps);

Rapid prototyping (bodystorming, wire-framing, Lego modelling). Prototyping is where the magic happens. Prototypes make your concept real in the world. They provide a reference that you can test with each other and         with your market. Other people can play with your prototype, ask questions, add features, remove features, help       you make something that others will be delighted to use; and,

Startup business development tools – like the Value Proposition Canvas and the Business Model Canvas and “5 whys”

If you don’t believe it is possible to build a new business or service in 24 hours of intense activity with a bunch of strangers, come to the Jam and we’ll prove it.
