The Hackathon for assisted living, health, social care and community (HALE 2017) is the sixth event in its series organised jointly by the Vir.AL research group and by DS-Cubed in association with local councils and health organisations. HALE 2017 will be hosted by DS-Cubed  at the Innovation Centre of De Montfort University on Tuesday 28th February with possible extension to Wednesday 1st March 2017.  We will be solving the following  problems during our Hackathon this year  towards creating a proof of concept prototype:

  1. A serious game to tell real stories of homelessness of young people in UK and provide alternative decsions/storylines (based on real stories of other members of the family or firends in similar situations) to show what other possibilities exist and what helps could be accessed. DS-Cubed has so far helped to create a simple proof od concept of this serious game in UE4 and our team plus teams of volunteers will try to take this further during the hackathon event. The proposal is from the Leicestershire county council and people with personal experience of homelessness
  2. A VR game to raise  awareness, interest and participation in Musculosketal (MSK) conditions. The game aims to promote adherence to exercise following time limited physiotherapy exercise sessions and encourage participation in helping to sustain upper limb mobility. This tool can be developed for the numerous joints affected by MSK conditions. This proposal is from CLASH charity in Leicester.
  3. At last years Hackathon we worked on a Bluetooth LE sensor/wearable combined with an iPhone app to measure patient position allowing them to be positioned or re-positioned with greater accuracy. This time we would like to work on a software database of normal patient size values and the mathematics to combine these values with a measurement from the image to correct the patients' position and obtain a perfect image on repeat. From these values it is possible to either move the patient directly to the corrected position or move the X-ray camera to align with their current position. This would be useful where the patient is unable to cooperate due to injury or infirmity. The proposal is from a senior radiographer in the Leicester University Hospitals.

Our most recent Hackathon in Brasil was organised with the University of Sao Paulo in Sep. 2016 and focused on creating digital applications to help patients with Asthma (please see: http://technews.acm.org/archives.cfm?fo=2016-11-nov%2Fnov-09-2016.html#894540). Our June 2016 Hackathon in the UK focused on creating applications for East Midlands Ambulance Services (Fall Risk Assessment Tool) and Leicester University Hospitals X-ray Department plus further development of an open data platform for skin cancer (http://www.dmu.ac.uk/research/research-faculties-and-institutes/technology/viral/hackathon-events/2016/hackathon-2016.aspx)

FAQs

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

There are no ID requirements for the event itself, but the security of the venue within the university may require an ID and your ticket for allowing you into the buildings. Attendees must be 18+, but please contact me for cases when younger developer/ attendee are accompanied with parents.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

De Montfort University is only a few minutes from Leicester city centre and so public transport should be sufficient to get you to the venue. Please do not bring your car unless if you are travelling from another city. There are no parking spaces in the University however here is a list of local parking in the area.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Please bring along your laptop, chargers and mobile devices plus development software you normally use. There will be PCs available in the labs, but it still helps to have developer laptops. It will be your own responsibility to look after your personal devices and the event organisers cannot accept any responsibility.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please contact Samad at sahmadi@dmu.ac.uk

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

No, but if there is anyone else who may wish to attend they could register themselves. There is no need for email invitations.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes and please do. We need to have information about your skills and interests to be able to build the groups beforehand.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes, please.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

We expect this not to happen. Please let the organisers know if this is the case.

How to submit proposals for next Hackathons?

We are looking for proposals to develop applications which will help with problems in health, assisted living, social care, and communities. These applications could be in the form of hardware or software including mobile apps, web applications, stand-alone applications or games.

The solution should have an impact on vulnerable people's lives and the proposal will benefit from the collective knowledge of experts across various industries. We are open to resubmission of previous proposals from past Hackathons, provided they are not already completed.

Selected proposals will be developed during the Hackathon event by volunteers including developers, designers, and researchers from DS-Cubed. In previous years we have received submissions from local councils, hospitals, charities and local businesses. Our aim is to use expertise within universities to help public services, charities and small businesses to find solutions for their problems where there may not be enough funding to solve the problem through traditional channels.

Visit our Call For Proposals page to submit your idea. The deadline for submission of proposals is n. Results of shortlisting wilormally one month before the date of hackathon and selected proposals are  communicated at least two weeks before the event. Successful teams have to commit to attending and participating in the event and also possible helping with costs of catering. The software developed during the event will be Open Source to allow users and developers to study, change, improve and distribute the software after the event.
