One of the most pressing problems of our society is climate change. Consumerism and the resulting throw-away society is one of the leading causes for climate change.
'Natural resources are running out, but we buy petroleum based products. The economy is weak, but we indulge in foreign products. Our general health is declining, but we fuel our bodies with processed foods and bring toxic products into our homes. What we consume directly affects our environment, our economy, and our health, by supporting specific manufacturing practices and creating a demand to make more. In other words, shopping is voting and the decisions that we make every day have an impact.' (Bea Johnson: ‚Zero Waste Home‘, 2013, p. 9)
How can we, as a society, reduce our garbage footprint?
Did you ever wonder what actually happens to the things you throw away? Where does the garbage come from? Where is it going and what is being done with it?
- What exactly is this about?
In this two day hackathon we come together to work on the question: How might virtual reality help to support the zero waste movement? Be prepared for hands-on action, developing a solidifying concept and a first prototype. The results will be presented at the end of the event and are open for discussion. It is an experimental format to raise environmental awareness.
- What are the requirements to participate?
You should be familiar with a creation tool for VR. It can be Unity or a 360 camera, but it's important that you can not only talk about what you imagine, but also able to demonstrate it.
If available, please bring your own VR Devices and VR-compatible laptops. We have some PC work stations with Unity installed on them.
The hackathon will be held in English.
- What skills are needed?
If you are a tech-experienced programmer, a game developer, a designer, a storyteller, film maker or environmental activist, feel free to join! The most important thing will be your demonstration skills and that you are able to show your ideas through sketching, rapid prototyping, acting or whatever style of expression fits you the most.
- What’s the schedule?
On the first day you will get to know each other and your different working styles, get input from a zero waste expert and set up the hackathon goal. At the end of the first day you will be done with the storyboard for our VR application.
The second day is all about prototyping and proving (or disproving) the concept.
This hackathon is NOT about having a fully polished prototype at the end of the event, but it is an interdisciplinary learning experience.
Bringing food is up to you – there are some cafes and shops close to the venue where you can buy snacks or something warm to eat.
Hack local, think global!
