HS2 Hackathon showcase final
The Transport Systems Catpult (TSC) ran a Smart Infrastructure Hackathon with the HS2 team across the 8th & 9th December. Over a 30 hour period at the TSC offices, 17 teams made up of Innovators, Designers, students, data scientists and business strategists worked on solutions for challenges set by HS2.
The six best teams from the hackathon weekend have been put forward to a showcase final, which takes place on the afternoon of Thursday 1st February at the TSC in Milton Keynes. The teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of expert judges including HS2 CEO Mark Thurston and TSC CEO Paul Campion for their chance to the be overall winners.

There will be opportunities to network with HS2 and TSC staff throughout the event, as well as to see some lively and inspiring pitches from entrepreneurs and innovators working with the latest technologies. The teams include:
Gang of Seven – Developing stations and trains as social hubs providing health, education, childcare, shopping and more so they give back to local communities, through a social enterprise managed by a community interest company.
Geo Reality – Asset and Tunnel inspection using connected Augmented Reality systems.
BLS - Using Virtual Reality to train staff for working in hazardous environments and spotting Health and Safety issues.
Sensorail – Using train mounted vibration and acoustic sensors to detect overhead line and track failures in real time. The system can provide GPS locations to engineering teams via cloud services.
Mercury – Operative biometric passporting system which grants or denies access to HS2 sites via predefined requirements such as competency, health and working hours.
Hygiea – Using facial recognition, wearables and AI to monitor train operator health and emotional condition, and to control access to machinery.
