The NASA Space Apps Challenge is an international mass collaboration focused on space exploration that takes place over 48-hours in cities around the world. The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to address global needs applicable to both life on Earth and life in space... NASA is leading this global collaboration along with a number of government collaborators and over 100 local organizing teams across the globe.
WHAT: The 2019 Space Apps Huntsville Challenge is an opportunity for creative individuals to grow alongside Alabama’s cyber & startup community.
This event is focused on taking action with critical Earth Science challenges faced in space exploration and human life. You will be exploring the universal opportunities that embrace collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to address global needs that are applicable to both life on Earth and life in space.
WHY: The innovation accelerator non-profit organization known as Urban Engine is focused on Propelling Ideas Forward. Our goal at the Huntsville Space Apps Challenge is to inspire creativity with students, industry influencers, and established professionals to build the next generational wave of innovative & impactful solutions on which the larger NASA Space Apps Challenge global competition thrives.
HOW: Build solutions to NASA's challenges! Solve critical Earth Science problems faced in space exploration and human life. All including unique opportunities to engage in-person with NASA leadership throughout the duration of the event. Participants must register for the #SpaceAppsHSV AND International Space Apps Challenge to compete in this event. Please read the Participant Guide to learn more. This document will be reviewed and presented by Urban Engine on Saturday, October 19th for all hackathon participants!
WHO: Anyone of any age or background.
Story tellers, Youtube Creators, Designers, Programmers, Project Managers, Subject Matter Experts, and Interface Builders. Or come to learn a new skill, no previous tech skills required. Since 2014, the International Space Apps Challenge is 48-hour hackathon event established by NASA globally that is facilitated by participating host cities locally. Urban Engine, known as a 501c(3) organization, facilitated the event as a host city in Huntsville, AL (aka "The Rocket City”) for the first time in 2017, where over 187 host cities and 25,000 individuals participated in the International Space Apps Challenge. Urban Engine and SpaceAppsHSV had ~100 high school, college and professional participants with over 50 local technical mentors, subject matter experts, & judges participating in the event as volunteers to the global initiative.
WHEN: THREE major events! CoWorking Night™, Kick Off Day, & The Hackathon
1. The signature CoWorking Night™ educational workshops program features subject matter & mentorship expertise provided at no cost to the public. No RSVP - Just show up!
2. The Kick Off Day (October 18th) features the Space Apps Expo: Industry leaders and influencers will demonstrate their latest and greatest technologies for Huntsville’s talented professionals interested in STEM & Aerospace!
3. The 48HR-Hackathon (October 19-20th) will be a global endeavor with the International Space Apps Challenge as well as the Main Stage of #SpaceAppsHSV!

Urban Engine is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to fueling sustainable ideas with hyper-local impact across the industries of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) across the region. Urban Engine proactively nurtures communities of creatives, makers, doers, engineers, and influencers for the purpose of sustainable socio-economic growth in small and large cities where innovation is brewing.
Our goal is to inspire creativity with space exploration and all of its glory through collaboration, and energetic current- and next-generation startups with aspiring and professional problem-solvers to build innovative solutions with the NASA Space Apps Challenge global competition. The 2018 Space Apps Huntsville Challenge is an opportunity to engage Alabama’s thriving college and professional startup community to take on critical Earth Science challenges faced in space exploration and human life. This event inspires innovation with scientific challenges by using creative business strategy, software development and technology solutions.
Urban Engine has partnered with Intuitive Research, Huntsville STEAMWorks, and AIAA to develop technical challenges for students and professionals as competition participants. There will be prizes, CoWorking Night™ Space-themed workshops, on-site facility field trip visit, and an opportunity to engage with NASA leadership mentors and subject matter experts. Get your spacesuits ready for liftoff, this is going to be wild!
