DAY HACK

Two engineers from IBM Watson will be with us all day to help work with their Bluemix API.

From 9:00am to 11:00am they will be doing two presentations:

1. Using Node.js to interface with Bluemix

2. Creating an android app to interface with Bluemix. (For this you will need to have android studio pre-installed: https://developer.android.com/studio/install.html)

Teams of 1 to 4 people will then have until 4:00 to hack together a project. There are no product pitches, no decks, no market research. This is purely a hackathon. The Kamloops Makerspace will be on site, engineers/developers from iTel and IBM will also be available to assist in your projects as needed.

Bring your laptop and whatever else you need for your project. The IBM folks have an IoT focus so keep that in mind. You do not need to be super technical to participate - you can work with someone on a project or go for the ridiculous category prize and make something insane with a bit of assistance from the people floating around helping out

Prizes will be given out for the best in each of 3 categories.

Technical excellence

Well functioning code, cleanly written with comments, tests, documentation) that performs some function. The hack with the best structure/documentation AND functionality will win.

Most interesting/innovative

The hack that is the most interesting, innovative or novel - let your creativity shine. It doesn't have to work well it just has to work well enough to demo for the judges.

 Most Absurd/Hilarious/Ridiculous

It isn't all serious here. The hack that is the craziest, most absurd one will win this. If you can make it work once, at demo time - good enough.

Now, we aren't saying the judges can be bribed but it is well known the frostyCON judges can bend the rules for the right frosty beverage or cold hard cash (everything is cold, it is kind of our thing).

Prizes include:

  • A Maker kit from KIC - a complete kit with breadboard, Arduino, various toggles and LEDs.
  • A Creator series Lego Lamborghini from your local VMUG
  • $50 Cold hard cash from Jordan Rinke (unless someone else wants to give people money he is ok with that too.)
  • Unknown but awesome prize from Kamloops Makerspace

Other prizes will be added as we are able to source them

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What exactly is a LAN Party?

A LAN Party is an event where gamers of all types - PC, Xbox, Wii, Playstation - get together to play games, drink, and eat snacks.

I’m not a big gamer, is this still for me?

**YES, absolutely. **We will have more leisure games set up for anyone who is not a hardcode gamer. Mario Kart and other fun games will be available. Board games are also welcome. This is a social event, not a hardcore event. A set of people will be just hanging out to talk with and meet.

Do I have to show up for the whole time?

No, you may come and go as you please. Some people prefer to stay quite late, and others only hang around for a few hours.

Do I have to show up right at 5pm?

No, you may come and go as you please. 5:00-7:30pm will be a board-game only period for those who enjoy board games and to give time for everyone to setup. Please feel free to show up at any point during the LAN party’s duration.

Where should I park?

There will be a unloading area right outside the door. You may park your car there to unload any equipment you have, and afterwards move your car to a parking location. Parking is available in the immediate area.

Who is this open to?

Everyone! Please bring your friends!

Can I bring game X or gaming system Y?

Absolutely! We will have designated games so that everyone can play together on the same game if they’d like, but you’re more than welcome to bring anything you want. Alternatives, such as board games and Wii games, will be available.
