NACOSS SOUTHEAST ZONAL FEMALE HACKATHON 2018

The National and the SouthEast Zonal Secretariats of the Nigeria Association of computer Science Students (NACOSS) is happy to Announce the SouthEast Zonal Female Hackathon 2018. The event which is the maiden edition of a proposed annual program in the southeastern part of Nigeria creates a platform for young girls and women from the South-East geo-political zone who are passionate about building a career in Information Technology (IT). This will in-turn be an avenue to empower more young girls and women from the zone to be independent, skilled, embrace Technology and be career oriented. The theme for this year’s event is: “Redesign the Algorithm” + Evolve, Activate & Explode. Over the years, there has been poor participation of females in Information Technology (IT) especially from the south-eastern part of Nigeria and this poses a very big challenge and concern to our generation as most women are delving into make-up and pageantry thus shying away from the 21st century career/business. With the NACOSS Zonal Female Hackathon, we shall re-orientate the ladies in the zone as well as train and expose them to real life challenges, helping them master skills and be able to proffer solutions to our daily challenges using technology. The event has been slated to hold at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka between June 12th to June 15th 2018. Onyinyechi Nmecha, the Female Zonal Coordinator of the association who through her office is championing this event stated that this shall be an intensive three days event where the main focus will be: 1. Orientate young girls and women from the south-eastern part of Nigeria to embrace technology as a tool to building a better career and reducing unemployment. 2. Create Teams of Female Software developers/Tech savvy persons across secondary and tertiary schools in the southeast zone. 3. Create a forum where students can market themselves and their skills/solutions to investors, companies and individuals present at the conference for investments. 4. Connect the members to opportunities cum encourage them to solve societal challenges using Technology. 5. Encourage talents and hard-work via skill acquisition, mentorships and coaching. Other of the Event Highlights are: 1. Paper presentation. 2. Innovation Software Competition: This will be the major highlight of the event as several teams from all categories of the trainings will contest for the best idea as the jury will judge and announce the winner. 3. Trainings: There shall be trainings on various Technologies and Tools by the best Industry Stakeholders and Leaders. Each participant is expected to choose from among the six training categories(Web development + Ui/UX, Computer Graphics - 2D&3D, Cyber Security and Computer Networking, Computer Hardware Repairs and Maintenance, Mobile App Development, Digital Marketing) as well as participate in the Idea Challenge on the Grand Finale. 4. Inter-school Quiz competition for Secondary Schools: This quiz competition will be ICT based and only female secondary schools whose teams participated and are present in the conference are eligible to contest. 5. Graphics Competition: This Competition are strictly for the participants of the graphics category during the training session. They will be given a task to perform in the shortest possible time. 6. Idea Challenge/Pitching: Incubators and Angel investors will listen to some un-developed ideas from the southeast ladies and connect with the ideaowners for investment. 7. Hacking Challenge: This is a computer hacking contest, the contestants are challenged to exploit widely used software and mobile devices with previously unknown vulnerabilities. It is a hacking competition where teams of crackers attempt to attack and defend computers and networks using certain software and network structures. 8. Hardware Challenge: This Category is for the participants of the hardware trainees. They will be able to fix common hardware problem within the shortest possible time. 9. Mentorship Sessions: There shall be mentorship sessions between the participants and industry stakeholders and leaders. 10. Awards to Event Sponsors, IT Woman of the Year, etc. 11. Peagentry, Dinner and Award Night for outstanding NACOSSites The event shall also host Great women from across the country both from the Academia as well as other ecosystems to mentor and coach these female Techies.
