#PeaceHackBEY

#PeaceHackBEY is a social good hackathon taking place in Beirut at UK Leb Hub on September 25-27. For Arabic version of the following text, scroll down!

It is part of the Talking Peace Festival, an initiative by International Alert that brings together technologists, designers, developers, the NGO sector and peace practitioners to create and realise ideas and solutions that can be used to stop violent conflict, help build peace and combat the issues faced by Lebanese society.

And we are looking for YOU! If you are enthusiastic, passionate and have a strong interest in empowering women, youth and refugees in Lebanon, and developing ideas to combat the challenges faced by Lebanese society then we want you to join us at #peacehackBEY!

Participants should either have strong technology skills (programming and design) or an interest in making a difference in the not-for-profit community; peacebuilding or programming experience not required.

It would be beneficial if you (or at least someone in your team) speaks English at an intermediate level.

#peacehackBEY will focus on challenges faced by Lebanese residents, with particular emphasis on access to resources (electricity, water, etc) and access to services (justice, education, medical). Experts will be on-hand to explain how gender, age and economic status change the nature of these issues.

Hackers then choose a challenge and work in teams to build a prototype technology solution. Prototypes are presented at the end of the hack, with prizes for the best solutions. And everyone gets a fancy Ceritificate of Participation to take home!

Judging criteria

The prototypes produced by developers will be judged according to the following criteria:

1. Impact: Does the app / project have a measureable impact?
2. User Experience and Presentation: Is the app / project simple, well-designed, and easy to use by non technical users?
3. Accessibility: Is the app / project usable by and useful to people with disabilities?
4. Sustainability: How likely is the app / project to survive beyond the hackathon? Is it viable? Is the idea promising enough to warrant sustained development and attention?

FAQs

Is this event free ?

Yes, but getting a ticket on eventbrite does not guarantee you a place at the Hack. Please look out for the Welcome Email once you sign up which will give you further instructions. If you've gotten a ticket and have not received a welcome email, please contact us asap!

Can I get more than one ticket or get tickets for other people?

No. If there are multiple people from your organisation or team interested in attending, all of you must get your own ticket with your own email addresses.

What can/can’t I bring to the event?
Bring a laptop, your ideas, skills and talents. It’s probably best that pets stay at home!

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Yes, but please email us before you do

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, but it would make life easier if you could!

The name on the registration/ticket doesn’t match the attendee. Is that okay?
We’d rather they did. Drop us an email if you want to make any amendments.

Can I start before the hackathon?
You can prepare wireframes, outlines, or notes but you cannot start any of your design or development until the beginning of the hackathon. We will be setting specific challenges on Friday.

What resources am I allowed to bring/use during the hackathon?
Anything you need to complete your prototype.

What if I don’t finish the project in the allotted time period?
You will be judged based on the completed features. It will be up to the judges’ discretion to determine how your project ranks against other teams’ projects.

Do I need to bring my own computer?
Yes! Please bring your own laptop and relevant chargers.

I’m hungry!
Hopefully you won’t be – we’ll provide you with food and drink for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the occasional snack in between. You are also welcome to bring your own food. If you have any specific requirements, drop us a line and we will try and suit your needs.

Will the event be in English?
Yes, the majority of the event, speakers, and hosts will be English speaking but there will of course be Arabic speakers there who can help you get the most out of the event.

What happens now that I’ve gotten a ticket?
We will be emailing you with some details about the hack and introducing you to your Hack Hosts (i.e. the people you’ll be seeing on the day!) who’ll be keeping in touch with you over the next few weeks with any updates to the hack, important information, your Hack Packs, and be on hand to answer any questions.

هو فعالية اجتماعية تقام  في بيروت خلال شهر ايلول المقبل. وهي جزء من مهرجان السلام, مبادرة من international Alert لتجمع بين التقنين, المصممين, المطورين, و الجمعيات والمنظمات الغير الحكومية, و صانعي السلام من أجل خلق وايجاد افكار وحلول يمكن أن تستعمل لايقاف الصراعات العنيفة, والمساعدة في بناء السلام ومكافحة القضايا التي تواجه المجتمع اللبناني.

ونحن نبحث عنك أنت. اذا كنت متحمس, شغوف, وعندك اهتمام قوي في تقوية دور المرأة, اليافعين, واللاجئين في لبنان, وتطوير الافكار لمكافحة التحديات التي تواجه المجتمع اللبناني, فنحن اذا نريدك أن تكون معنا خلال هذه الفعالية! المشاركون يجب ان تكون عندهم  اما المهارات التقنية العالية (برمجة وتصميم) أو عندهم اهتمام في صنع تغيير في المحتمع الغير ربحي الهدف( لا بشترط أن يكون لديك مهارات تقنية ) سوف يكون من مفيد اذا كنت ( أو على الأقل شخص واحد من فريقك) بتحدث الانكليزية بشكل متوسط.

فعالية بيروت سوف تركز على التحديات التي تواجه المجتمع اللبناني, مع تركيز أكبر على موضوع المرأة, اليافعين واللاجئين وحصولهم على:

1- الموارد ( كهرباء, ماء .. الخ)
2- الخدمات ( التعليم, الطب, .. الخ)

المشاركون سوف يختارون ويعملوا ضمن فرق من أجل بناء نماذج حلول تقنية. هذه النماذج سوف تقدم في نهاية الفعالية, مع جوائز للحلول الأفضل.

معايير التحكيم

الأدوات التي سوف تتنتج من قبل المبرمحين سوف يحكم عليها وفقا للمعايير التالية:

1- التأثير: هل المشروع او التطبيق يمكن قياس مدى تأثيره ؟

2- خبرة المستخدمين والتقديم: هل التطبيق / المشروع بسيط, مصمم جيدا, وسهل الاستخدام من غير التقنين ؟

3- سهولة الوصول: هل التطبيق / المشروع قابل للاستعمال ومفيد للاشخاص المعاقيين

4- الاستمرارية: ماهي احتمالية أن التطبيق / المشروع قابل للاستمرارية بعد الفعالية؟ هل سيستمر؟ هل الفكرة واعدة  لتبرر التطوير والانتباه اليها في المستقبل ؟

ماذا لو لم استطع أن انهي المشروع في الوقت المحدد؟

التحكيم سوف يكون بناء عل المميزات التي انتهيت من عملها. تقدير الحكام هو ماسيقرر كيف مشروعك سيقيم مقارنة بمشروعات الفرق الاخرى

هل احتاج لأن أحضر معي حاسبي الشخصي ؟

نعم! يجب أن تحضر معك حاسبك الشخصي والشاحن
