Pizza and Python Hackathon Night at the Ylab Maker Space

Pizza and Python Hackathon Night: SMS DDOor Bell!

Pizza and Python Hackathon Night: SMS DDOor Bell!

(18 years + event)

If you’ve been to ylab maker space, you know that the David Dunlap Observatory has a serious lack of doorbell. Even if it did have one, we might not hear it because our work is often more than a little noisy. It’s a historic property, so we can’t drill holes for wires.

We love Python... Arduino... and Raspberry Pi... so if we put them all together, can we make some kind of SMS/audio/visual/wireless doorbell?

Something that triggers both a sound and maybe a flashing light?

Have the sight and sound alerts happen in both of our maker space rooms?

Can we use Twilio’s free SMS service and APIs to trigger it via text message?

Or maybe a Bluetooth connection?

Flash a light from a phone through the door peephole to trigger it?

What other crazy ideas can we come up with?

Bring your laptop. Bring Arduino and Raspberry Pi gear if you have some... but we’ll have some, along with a variety of sensors and relays to trigger other devices. We’ll supply the Internet connection... and pizza!

YOU MUST BRING:

  • Your own laptop
