Project Encoder Hackathon

Calling all Encoders!

Hack for a cause

Project Encoder runs hackathons in the Bay Area. While the hackathon itself helps promote creativity and confidence in the young coders who attend, all of the profit from the event will go toward giving low-income school districts and their students access to STEM-based supplies and resources, such as laptops and educational scholarships. This month, our goal is to supply one classroom of 32 students with a set of computers so they can have an equal opportunity to explore the fields of STEM.

Any and all levels are welcome, grades 6 through 12! You can come with your own team (no more than 5 per team). No team? No problem, we'll figure that out for you. Form a team, solve a problem, design an app to blow away the judges.

There will be prizes for the top winners in each group (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced)!

Register now to become an Encoder and give back to the STEM community! Your ticket includes lunch/brainfood for the day. (Vegetarian options will be available)

IMPORTANT: IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HACKATHON YOU MUST BRING A SIGNED LIABILITY WAIVER WITH YOURSELF TO THE EVENT! LINK TO THE WAVER HERE.

You must also bring your own laptop to participate in the hackathon!

Schedule for the day:

  • 8:00am-8:30am: Sign in, let students get settled, split up into teams

  • 8:30am-9:00am: Opening remarks, the introduction of the prompt

  • 9:00am-12:00pm: First leg of hackathon!

  • 12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch and break

  • 1:00pm-4:00pm: Second leg of hackathon!

  • 4:00pm-5:00pm: Judging and awards, closing remarks

Not sure which category to sign up for?

Here's a small guide to choosing your group:

  • Beginner: I have very little HTML experience. I can understand the basic structures of code, but I need to work a bit harder to be able to write my own program.

  • Intermediate: I'm fairly confident in my coding ability. I may have taken a class, or I taught myself a decent amount of HTML and could write a program with very little or no help.

  • Advanced: I'm very confident in my coding ability. I'm comfortable working with HTML, and I may already have written several programs using it.

Still not sure? Don't worry; sign up for the one you think fits best, and we can switch you around during the hackathon if need be.

We can't wait to see what you create!
