SCIENCE HACKATHON: Recognizing objects with Artificial Intelligence

APPLY NOW TO THE SCITHON!

Norwegian Customs and Iris.ai warmly welcome you to apply to the Scithon to discover the most recent advances in object recognition. Join us in mapping out potential solutions for automation of object recognition with the help of recent advances in e.g. deep neural networks.

Preventing the illegal transport of goods across borders is a challenging task for customs. Identifying and selecting objects viable for control, physical or regulatory, is based on human efforts, both the intelligence gathering and search procedures. Norwegian Customs want to develop a platform for automated selection support of those objects by making use of the increasing availability of digital information regarding the transportation of goods. The goal is to increase the quality of analysis, decrease the dependency of single persons, increase the organizations analytical capacity and automate time-consuming manual processes

WHAT: Scithon is a research sprint of 10 hours where teams of 3-4 are asked to explore the academic literature and map out potential solutions to the above mentioned problem. All teams will have access to Iris the AI science assistant and other research tools during the sprint. The winning team, selected by a panel of judges, will be awarded a prize of NOK 28,000.

GOAL: To identify ways to automate object identification based on current scientific research and developments in AI .

WHEN: The Scithon will be organised on October 25th 2017 at Oslo Science Park. All participants are expected to work on-site throughout the day.

WHO WE LOOK FOR: Researchers and students with a curious mind from across research disciplines. Previous experience in the areas of the research problem is beneficial but not required. You can either apply with your team or individually. The organizers will create teams based on individual applications prior to the event.

HOW TO APPLY: Apply to the Scithon by filling out this form.  (by clicking "attending" on Eventbrite won't secure you a spot). Deadline for the applications is October 18th 2017.

The event is organised by Iris.ai and Norwegian Customs.
