SURGE Neuro-hackathon 2020

    About The Event

    This Deep Dive event is a weekend long event in collaboration with Brain Awareness Week. This Deep Dive is aimed at bringing together students from across disciplines to develop creative applications of neuroimaging data.

    Teams will compete to develop the most innovative brain-computer interface (BCI) application, using open-source software packages and data.

    No prior background or experience needed to participate!

    Students in Neuroscience, Computer Science and curious data geeks are all welcome! Teams will be formed on Friday evening. Mentors will be on hand to provide support. It's all about fun, creativity and learning!

    There will be free food and beverages! Cash prizes will also be awarded in two categories:focusing on Machine Learning and Applications.

    17:00 Introduction by Aaron Newman - crash course in EEG and BCI
    18:00 Dinner and "lightning round" 1-minute introductions by mentors and participants
    18:30 Team formation (for those looking for teams) and networking
    Finished by 19:00

    9:00 Introduction to the MNE software package and BCI libraries
    10:00 Breakout sessions:

    • Stimulus programming

    • Classifiers for BCIs

    • Machine learning approaches to EEG artifact correction

    11:00 Begin hacking
    12:00 Lunch
    1:00 Keep hacking
    17:00 Dinner
    18:00 SURGE closes for the day (those who want to keep going can adjourn to the Library or other open spaces)

    Please note: Timing of presentations and judging on Sunday is dependent on the number of teams. It is possible that we will finish earlier

    SURGE is an innovation sandbox at Dalhousie University funded by the Nova Scotia government, whose aim is to train science students to translate scientific discovery into economic growth and solutions to the world’s big problems.
