The Big Conversation about Families, Parents and the Workplace
During late September and October, we are inviting HR professionals, researchers and interested organisations to contribute to a public policy ‘hackathon’ on a range of issues relating to ‘Families, Parents and the Workplace’ #CIPDbigconvo. A ‘hackathon’ is a joint problem-solving’ activity – so we are going to be sharing experiences, hearing stories, telling of our successes, identifying challenges, finding solutions and working together to come up with problem-solving ideas. We want to identify practical ideas that HR people can implement in their organisations and also any public policy issues that need to be addressed.
This is the official launch event for something a bit different from CIPD Manchester! And we hope you will get involved, even if you can’t make this Kick-Off event #CIPDbigconvo. We are looking forward to welcoming colleagues from across the North to this event.
There are lots of different aspects to ‘Families, Parents and the Workplace’ – so far we have identified maternity discrimination, childcare, carers, making shared parental leave work, adoption leave and flexible working – but this is not a comprehensive list! Families come in all shapes and sizes and there are many challenges to combining family life with work. We want to explore all this and more – but need your help for this.
At the Kick-Off event, we will have some short talks to inspire and inform us. The emphasis at the event will be on us working together to start identifying the key issues and focus for the next stage of the hackathon. If you aren’t familiar with using Twitter there will be an opportunity to learn about it at this launch event. So, there will be lots of opportunity to share your experiences and have your say.
Following on from this launch event, there will be many opportunities to contribute and continue ‘The Big Conversation’ through:
• Our dedicated blog – why not write a piece for this or share a case study?
• #HRHour Twitter Chat – we will be taking over this regular Twitter Chat on Thursday 28th September 8-9pm – why not join in by following the hashtag #HRHour and tweeting?
• During October there will be 4 x 24hour focused ‘Jams’ on Twitter – the focus for these conversations will come out of the Kick-Off event. They will use our hashtag #CIPDbigconvo.
• We are going to experiment with using ‘tricider’ an online brainstorming and voting tool.
• The ‘hackathon’ will close with an early morning fringe event on Thursday 9th November at CIPD’s Annual Conference & Exhibition in Manchester. This will be advertised on Eventbrite shortly.
In the meantime, why not look out for the series of thought-provoking blogs which we have commissioned to prepare us for ‘The Big Conversation’. They will appear from mid-September onwards. Look on LinkedIn and Twitter for them from CIPDManchester #CIPDbigconvo
