The Kick-off Session for the San Diego SmartCity Hackathon

What can we do to make San Diego one of the greenest and most connected cities in the world?

Please register for the San Diego Smart City Hackathon Kickoff & Info Session, which will take place on March 29 at 5pm at UCSD

The Silent Intelligence, the Center for Wireless Communications at UCSD and the team at the City of San Diego are planning a one of a kind event and one of a kind challenge for the best in our tech and design community.  We'll be solving real city problems based on input from multiple city departments, using real city data from multiple sources and remote sensors, we’ll produce solutions that will ultimately help the City deliver on its Climate Action Plan.

The target is to come up with original creative solutions to difficult city problems, which require wireless sensors and a lot of data. Something, which has not been done before.

The event will be opened by Almis Udrys, Director of Performance and Analytics of the City of San Diego (the guy behind the Open Data Project) and Prof. Sujit Dey, Director of Center for Wireless Communications at UCSD

The actual San Diego Smart City Hackathon will take place on May 20-22.

How can startups and tech companies drive innovation to the city.

Regardless how big your company is - you can make a difference to the city by offering your solutions. What are the best ways to do that? What are some examples? What things is the city looking for? What are the opportunities for innovation? We will answer these and many other questions at our panel discussion.

Speakers:

Kiva Algood, Vice President, Business Development, Smart Cities and Industrial IOT, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. 

As the global business lead for Qualcomm’s Smart Cities initiative, Kiva Allgood helps strategic partners and cities build long term connectivity plans and strategies that help improve the livability, sustainability and connectivity fabric for its citizens. This includes providing critical insight into Qualcomm’s entire product, software and services portfolio. 

Before joining Qualcomm, Allgood ran a startup focused on delivering high quality headphones and hearing devices to special needs children and adults.  Prior to the startup Allgood held executive positions at Motorola and GE.

Kristin Tillquist, Director of State Government Affairs & Innovation Policy, Office of Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer

As Director of State Government Affairs & Innovation Policy for the Office of Mayor Faulconer, City of San Diego, Kristin combines her intergovernmental, public policy, technology and economic development background. Dynamic, resourceful, and politically astute, Kristin has strong leadership and extensive management skills due to her many years as Chief of Staff, along with practical legal experience and excellent analytical abilities. Visionary, and strongly committed to forging positive relationships, she's results focused and achievement driven with a proven record of program development and delivery.

Katie Rast, Director, Fab Lab San Diego

Katie is the Director of Fab Lab San Diego, and has worked with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop the San Diego instantiation of the Global Network of MIT Fab Labs.  Since 2007, Katie has managed this local invention space, and has developed and deployed programs focused on innovation, ideation, hardware development, and rapid prototyping. 

Katie has been an evangelist for the Maker Movement for the past eight years, and remains dedicated to the belief that communities benefit when tools, teams and training are made accessible. As a part of her ongoing efforts to grow the local maker community, Katie co-produces the Maker Faire in San Diego, a showcase of local innovation and creativity. This year, the San Diego Maker Faire collaborated with Balboa Park and the City of San Diego to produce a park-wide event that brought over 25,000 attendees to Balboa Park during its centennial anniversary year.
