Transforming Ageing; SoCaTel Hackathon

    “Transforming Ageing” Hackathon

    Rethinking access to and delivery of health and social care services in the home

    Register today – only 52 places available!

    The SoCaTel project has engaged with a range of people who have a legitimate interest in older adults’ long term care services. Over a recent two week period, health care professionals, nurses, care assistants, older persons, researchers and policy makers co-created on SoCaTel’s online platform. The ideas generated from this innovative collaboration have the potential to influence future development of older persons’ services and now need to be brought to life!

    How does it work?

    The Hackathon is organised as a contest between multi-skilled teams, the winner of which will have conceptualised and developed the best prototype of the ideas put forward. We have chosen a perfect hackathon environment for you and will provide onsite support, refreshments and entry to this super cool venue - the rest is up to you! Students (social work & community nursing) are welcome to join us to respond to queries about current health and social care services as part of the onsite support provided.

    More than just a HACKATHON!

    Your challenge is to transform the ideas for service improvements into real, efficient and viable applications. Over the course of 20+ hours, you will develop and prototype a new digital service for older persons’ care so the focus will be on UI/UX and software development skills. You will have 180 seconds to pitch your idea and demo to a panel of judges and will be provided with AV support, a microphone, and a projector.

    On the final night, the winning team will receive a SoCaTel prize, with a 3-month contract and financial support to develop the application. So think about the bigger picture and the opportunity to add an exciting project to your CV!

    Who should participate?

    All skills are valued and welcome, yet don’t forget that the ideas have already been generated so the focus is on implementation. We, therefore, envision the following profiles to be most suited for the job:

    -          Web and mobile developers

    -          UI/UX designers

    -          Computer students and other software development related profiles

    -          Curious and ambitious individuals

    Prizes

    We will have three SoCaTel winners on the night, the first SoCaTel winner will be awarded a 3-month contract to bring the prototype to a beta version of the product;

    • 1st Prize: 500€ + 6,000€ contract for a 3-month development work
    • 2nd Prize: 300€
    • 3rd Prize: 200€

    The judges will evaluate all of the works presented based on the following 4 criteria:

    • Concept
    • Design
    • Development
    • Final presentation

    Each prototype or mock-up presented will be the property of the team, which will take full responsibility for ensuring such rights of ownership, intellectual property and originality within the limits of the law (e.g. filing of patents and other such registrations as appropriate).

    Create your dream team and join us!

    All teams will be made of 4 people. At registration you can join as a full team, a partial team or alone, just make sure that at least one of you can code.

    If your team is not complete, we will find teammates for you (and you can specify the kind of profile you are looking for). Similarly, when registering alone, you will be asked to specify your skills and write a short description of yourself. An e-mail will be sent to introduce you to your team before the start of the hackathon.

    At the time of registration, you will need to find a name for the team and specify who the project leader will be. Once your team is proposed, our staff will check the information and contact you if necessary before validating your team.

    FAQs

    What should I build?

    The general theme of the Transforming Ageing Hackathon is better access to and delivery of older person’s health and social care services in the home. Individuals and stakeholders impacted by and interested in these services have come up with ideas on how to do things better. Your job is to turn these ideas into prototypes in the form of web/mobile applications.

    In order to participate, do I need to stay for the entire Hackathon i.e. 20+ hours?

    This is not mandatory but we do highly recommend making best use of the time available at the venue to maximize your chances of success.

    Is there a hashtag?

    Yes, it’s #socatel

    Can I get support to travel to a hackathon?

    Sorry, we do not provide travel support to attend our hackathon.

    How big can my team be?

    Your team should be made of 4 people. Don’t worry if you don’t join as a team, we will team you up with other participants.

    Can I get a head start on my hack?

    To ensure a level playing field for all participants, all code and assets must be created during the hackathon. Failure to comply with this rule may result in disqualification of the offending team. Nevertheless, feel free to make plans, create wireframes, and brainstorm ahead of the event.

    Can I use external APIs, services, and SDKs?

    You are encouraged to use any 3rd party services, APIs, open-source projects, libraries, and frameworks as long as they are publicly available on the web.

    Who owns the intellectual property generated during the hackathon?

    What you create is yours. No one else, including SoCaTel, has the right to use it outside of the competition.

    By participating in the hackathon and accepting these Regulations, each participant hereby:

    • declares that each prototype or mock-up presented is an original work and in no way violates, in whole or in part, the intellectual or industrial property rights of others and releases SoCaTel and its partners from any and all responsibility, liability, or request for compensation for damages that should be made by any third party;
    • acknowledges that each prototype or mock-up presented is the property of the team, which takes full responsibility for ensuring such rights of ownership, intellectual property and originality within the limits of the law (e.g. filing of patents and other such registrations as appropriate);
    • acknowledges that any publication by SoCaTel of the prototype or mock-up on websites or social media will result in the same being visible to the public and that SoCaTel assumes no responsibility for any use and/or abuse of the idea and/or any development of the idea and/or related project by any party coming into contact with said idea online or on social media and hereby waives any right to demand compensation for damages from SoCaTel for any reason.
    • acknowledges that the prototypes and any dissemination of their results reflects only the author’s view and that the European Commission is not responsible for any use that may be made of the information it contains.

    What if I don't know how to code?

    You are still welcome! As long as you come willing to learn and ready to contribute ideas, you can contribute to a team. But your team must have at least one developer because you will be evaluated on the technical solution of a demo you deliver in those 20+ hours.
