After the inaugural hackathon at Victoria University, which stimulated eight start-ups, it’s time to dial things up a notch in the west.
For the second hackathon, VU is making its state-of-the-art facilities and resources available for you to play around with. The hackathon coincides with the soft launch of the University’s start-up agency and stimulation space, the Hanger. Participating in the hackathon will give you a sneak peek into the Hanger’s future activities.
What can you expect?
A full day of experimentation and exploration with a westie flavour. If you’re walking around with an idea about how to address a problem, or you’re just interested in exploring the first steps of starting a venture, this is your opportunity to join a diverse group of hackers, hustlers, hipsters and other emerging experts and start something great.
The day will be facilitated by Victoria University’s Entrepreneurs in Residence Gus Balbontin, Jordan Gianfrancesco and Thomas Anbeek. Between them they have founded businesses, grown communities and worked with some of the world’s most interesting innovators. Beyond these three powerhouses, there will be a team of mentors and judges to help you along the way.
At the end of the day you’ll pitch your work to a judging panel, which will pick the winning team. The winning team will go home with a number of prizes that will help them take the project to the next level. All promising projects can expect to be invited to join the Hanger. This will provide the team with space to work on their idea and access to the expertise of the three Entrepreneurs in Residence and their support team.
The hackathon, setting the stage for the Hanger, will focus on a number of streams that will allow you to positively impact the world around you through business:
- community
- sustainability
- immigration
- arts
- sport
- cultural blending
- local business
- health
- climate change.
Who's it for?
This hackathon is for people who are keen to address some of society’s biggest, hairiest and most audacious problems. Of course there’s only so much you can achieve in a one-day hackathon, so the Entrepreneurs in Residence and mentors will teach you tricks and tips that’ll be with you for the long haul.
The hackathon is open to all, and not restricted to any domain of expertise. Diversity in perspectives and approaches is what is going to make this day great. You can come with a team, an idea or both, but don’t worry if you have neither. We’ll make sure you get matched up with a great team and you can come up with an idea on the spot.
Don’t miss out – apply to be part of this great opportunity!
