What is Ageing @Google Academy

The word ageing can mean different things... living for many years, growing wise and mature - and also senescence, the mysterious process of deterioration in later life that leads to a gradual decline in our health, late-life diseases and eventually the ending of our lives. Thanks to advances in the treatment of infectious disease, people are living longer now, such that senescence is now the main cause of disease worldwide. But unlike infectious disease, the causes of ageing (senescence) remain poorly understood by scientists. Recent advances in the science of ageing are starting to reveal the causes of ageing, and to suggest treatments that could begin to stave off the ravages of senescence, which would allow us (or at least, future generations) to maintain better health in later life.
