WIT:H and Station Houston Hacker Society Meetup
Have you ever been to a hackathon or a tech event or even a classroom or your job, looked around, and thought, “Where my ladies at?”
Yeah, so have we.
Of course, we’re out there, and we don’t even have to look very far to find each other. But what if all the women-in-tech groups in the Houston area had an easy, fun way to share knowledge and resources, meet and work on projects together, and just generally bask in each other's glow? What if there was a solid community you could always count on to lift you up as you work hard and make lanes? We think such an alliance would be pretty much the best thing ever. So we’re making it happen.
For this special edition of The Hacker Society, we’ve teamed with Women in Tech: Houston (WIT:H), and all allies are welcome! We’ll be working on a website and related project ideas for the group, meeting new folks and talking about other ways to get involved. Please join us.
Let’s work to bring all women in technology — from astronauts to designers to biohackers to makers to everyone in between — together to share ideas, support each other and grow our community. In doing so, we foster supportive leadership, community, creative business disruption and economic development by and for women.
We’re working on a website for tech ladies in Houston, and we’d love your help. WIT:H owns http://withouston.org/ and has put up a placeholder theme. This is a simple Wordpress site, the purpose of which is to provide information on local women in tech groups, upcoming events, and educational opportunities. You can help make it amazing by writing content, designing, and/or coding. The website will need the following features:
-
Basic information architecture (about, mission, vision, contact info, partnerships)
-
Events calendar
-
Way for people to submit events to the calendar
-
Opportunities forum (for people to post jobs, gigs, opportunities) behind a login
-
Nice to have: Reddit-like forum with upvoting and other community management features (but without the bad treatment of community managers and ensuing scandal)

P.S. Please take a moment to think of all of the best ladies in your life, regardless of what they do. Got them in your minds? Good. Now call them. Tell them they’re awesome and ask them how their day is going. If you think they might also be interested in such a thing, invite them, too. If not, keep talking anyway. Y’all need to hang out more.
P.P.S. Questions? Ask Sarah Rigdon, one of the organizers, at srigdon@codeforamerica.org.
