Women Techmakers KC Hackathon

The First Annual Women Techmakers KC Hackathon will focus on virtual assistants, specifically interactions for the Google Assistant. These interactions can be used on compatible devices like Google Home, Android devices, iPhones and any other device where the Google Assistant is available.

A basic interaction for the Google Assistant requires no code and both technical and non-technical attendees can build interactions! To build these, we will be using Dialogflow (formerly known as API.ai) and Actions on Google.

    Schedule

    • Check-in and Networking at 9:00a

    • Event Starts: 9:30a

    • TechTalk on the tools

    • Codelab for guided hands-on experience

    • Lunch and networking

    • Hackathon where you'll create your vision for the Google Assistant!

    The Technologies

    Actions on Google logo

Our interactions will use Actions on Google, the platform provided by Google to communicate with the Google Assistant. This is the public API to the Google Assistant.

    Dialogflow logo

Dialogflow (formerly known as API.ai) is one of the most common conversational language processing platforms used when creating applications and interactions for the Google Assistant. It supports other conversational platforms as well, including Facebook Messenger and Slack. Dialogflow isn't required when building for the Google Assistant although it provides a simplified interface and best of all, it's free.

    Get a head start!

We will cover all the basics of these services during the event but if you'd like to look at these services ahead of time, here are a few places to start.

    Teamwork

While it’s not required, we definitely recommend working in a team, especially for the hackathon portion of the day. You are able show up without one and find teammates the day of, but if you want to try to find teammates ahead of time, signup for our Slack at https://slack.gdgkc.org/ and start talking on #women-techmakers channel.

Work better alone? That's ok, too!
